Rain!

Post » Wed Feb 16, 2011 2:49 pm

I dont know about you guys but I thought it was epic having rain in Fallout, it actually looks quite good too, just a shame there's no splash effect on the floor :(

Anyone else jump out of their seat in exitement the first time it rained in Honest Hearts?

Yes Rain effects are nice also noticed the thunderstorm efffect (very cool indeed)

The only splashing effects are visible on rivers :)

But yeah it's more immersive, would have been cool to add it in the Mojave (in some parts)

I thought it was cheaply added 2d animation rain, but hey, I'm not a devoted fan.

Also, I didn't say devoted fan, it changed what I said !

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time had better looking rain.

I thought it looked bad but I appreciated their effort.

The engine never produced great rain, from what I recall about Morrowind.
For the engine/game I think it looks/does well. I'm more into the sound & atmosphere of stormy weather vs. how good the raindrops look tho. :whistling:

Edit:even in games w/decent rain it still never looks like real-life rain to me. And I love how in movies, they have to use rain machines that produce much bigger rain streams than in real life, otherwise it looks unimpressive on-screen. heh

You are right, the sound and the atmosphere of overcast damp weather is well done for how aged the engine is.
I find it really silly, for example both Joshua and Daniel sitting outside in the rain reading their books instead of going into their caves, just makes me scoff a little bit as I walk by.

In the future though, with Bethesda's new Creation engine, it will be awesome to see npc's react to rainfall and gather in shelter... Raindrops splashing on water surfaces, and dripping off the roofs on buildings.
and also the same great sounds, feel, and improved visuals, to make the game really come to life in ESV:Skyrim and the next Fallout game.

There is that.
The Nevada Skies mod has NPC's walking bent over at the waist w/arms around the head during "sandstorms" - not the cowering in fear animation, more a protective stance - which is a nice touch. They don't for rain, however.

I was disappointed by the rain. Especially the swapping of meshes between looking forward and looking up/down, it turned to what looked like snow. Oblivion did rain much better, and even then it was meh. If you shake the camera up and down at about the 45 angle mark, the rain disappears...

Props for effort, but in its current state, I would have preferred it be left out.

yes i love the rain, however the snow thing is a little silly. also i noticed the lack of splash on the ground/in the water, and the lack of puddles forming. i seem to remember there being puddles when it rained in oblivion? i still liked it though. i REALLY wish it would rain in the mojave sometimes

No, there were no forming puddles in Oblivion. Rain is/was just a animated mesh that followed the player around.

It was a nice touch, Although I would like to see rain in a city like DC and by rain I mean black rain and clear rain. Mix it up a little.

I didn't notice a snow effect even with turning the camera everywhere, in rapid circles, up and down, etc. Must be a graphic issue I don't have.

Will say that falling snow in this game looks terrible, I've see it via mod. Even with its imperfections, rain is miles better than an actual snow effect. :)

You may be remembering puddles from Red Dead Redemption? The rain in that game was excellent... Puddles formed, and even splashed when you ran through them.

Acting stealthy with the locals tribal armor on and their tomahawks equipped in the rain was sheer awesomeness.
So much fun crawling through shallow streams with a dark sky and a downpour coming down, sneaking up on White Legs and killing them.
That's a MUST for FO4.

Fall Out is an rpg style game, so i guess rain is nice because you can imagine its so much more, when its not.

I used to live in Death Valley. In http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker,_California. It rained a lot there sometimes. I wished they would've put it in the game, it's just west of Mojave Outpost.

Oh, huh. Learn something new every day. I do too tbh. Maybe fill it with some tribes, mutated rattlesnakes (not nightstalkers), and radscorps, maybe some deathclaws and geckos and you are golden.

Red dead redemption excelled in all of that stuff, which is why I love it so much lol, If I recall you even make shoe prints and stuff in snow, the only problem was that you couldn't swim. But anyways I liked the rain, it was a step in the right direction but leaves more to be wanted.
