Random Crashes - Debugging

Post » Sun Aug 12, 2012 5:49 pm

Hi,

i'm a noob. That being said please don't troll if i am in the wrong place entirely....

I have installed a few mods. And since i have a few ideas i am planning to try to create one myself.
Since installing the mods i have experienced seemingly random crashes. The game would just shut down and return to desktop and i have no idea what's to blame. Is there any way that i can find out what is causing this crash?
The only way i could think of is reinstalling the game and reinstalling the mods one by one to see when the error first occurs. But then again the crash is sort of random...

Thanks ahead,

bertibott

You're in the right place and you likely won't be trolled. We were all there at some point

A few suggestions, in order that you should try them:
  • Post your load order. Someone here might be able to spot an issue immediately and tell you how to solve it.
  • Install http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1402404-rel-boss-for-skyrim/ and have it automagically set your load order. Make sure to read the readme first and again if you have any issues with it. Still having issues? Post it in the BOSS thread (linked) with as much relevant detail as you can provide. This alone might solve your crashes.
  • Look into installing http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1399559-relz-wrye-bash/. Unfortunately, it's not the easiest tool to learn (that said, it gets much easier to use as you get experienced with it), but it's a great utility for mod managing. It's installer is great. It might also give you an error message that's relevant to your problems. It's best feature is the Bashed Patch. Unfortunately, it's not as well developed for Skyrim as it was for Oblivion, but it still has its uses. Make absolutely sure to read through the general readme. It'll help alot. Also, wrinklyninja will appreciate it since he re-wrote the god-awful readme that was there before.
  • Finally, if all else fails, do a binary search through your load order until you find the culprit. This might take awhile, especially if you can't reliably reproduce the crash, but it's the best way to do. If you don't know, a binary search (in this context), would involve deactivating half of your load order. Then check to see if the crashes persist. If they do, then you know the faulty mod is in the other half. If they don't, then you know the faulty mod is in that half. Then, you deactivate half of the mods in whichever was the "bad" half and so on. Just keep repeating that till you're left with one mod, that should be the culprit.
Hope I didn't forget anything!

Well that has not been BOSS'ed, see post from trira and install and run BOSS, that will get your load order right.

Additionally I am assuming your computer is strong enough to handle the high res texture packs?

Okay... so i ran BOSS it re-organised my Loadorder and also warned me about one mod being already included in another. I deleted it.
So now it's time to play the game and see if the problem's been solved.

Yes my computer more than meets the requirements for the HD textures.

If "skyrim performance mod.esp" is what http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/21392, uninstall it. It does absolutely nothing. In fact, it can only make matters worse, excluding the unlikely possibility that Skyrim can 1) run scripts meant for other games and 2) run scripts embedded in save files.
