Random, dead characters all over

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:21 pm

Whats up with that? Im only 7ish hours into this game (and not far enough in any quest to trigger important, unique NPC's to be kicking the bucket), but already Easy Pete has turned up decapitated in Goodsprings just outside his house. I've also run into a few unmet special NPC's in the wasteland with no apparent cause of death - just lying there in a heap.

I remember disappearing NPC's used to be a problem in Oblivion and happened once or twice throughout Fallout 3 - but never to this extent in such a short period of time.

A Powder Ganger can occasionally be found inside Goodsprings. And they're hostile to Goodsprings and vice versa. Could have killed Pete.

A few places have ambient life in combat. Two powder gangers are fighting off a bunch of bloatflys not far outside of Goodsprings.

Yeah, down by the highway. Found them and killed everything.

Very few 'essential' characters in the game. If they wander around (when you're nearby for them to spawn etc) for some reason, they could be killed by wildlife or bandits or whatever. They do fight each other sometimes, you'll hear it/see it as you run along here and there & if you can't find the squabble until it's over, all you see are corpses.

But Easy Pete is probably an unusual one to face that fate. If you reloaded a save before he's dead there's a chance the next time, the random factor would keep him alive. *shrug*

Occasionally a cazador can glitch and wander down from the north. The same can happen with deathclaws. I've heard stories of them wiping out the entire town.

I ran into the Lt Hayes (guy in charge of the Primm Garrison when you get there first), out by NCRCF for some odd reason. As I'm moving in the other direction, he ends up running into Powder Gangers, gets shot and killed.

I've run across skirmishes between NCR troopers and Legionaries, Fiends or Powder Gangers all across the map. Once, a Legion assassin squad hunting me somehow followed/ran into me right outside one of the Ranger stations. There was a decent battle there, though no NCR troops died (thanks in part to my heroics  ).

And then there's the local wildlife...

Have fast travelled into Prim and found Mrs Nash fighting a Powder Ganger a few times. Also in the Viper Encampment on 95, I wandered in once (walked from Novac) to find all of them dead, along with a couple of Geckos from Clark Field.

Easy Pete died for me inside of the Saloon. Just lying there, dead.

I like the randomness of things like that. I've never had an NPC die like that, but it definitely sells the dangerous nature of the wasteland.

There are various strange spawns inside towns and camps. Some creatures are sometimes spawned at wrong places for some reason. Like alpha deathclaw from quarry in Sloan or centaur in Primm next to NCR tents (just to name few from my games). It is most probably glitch or bug and I remember it happening in Fallout 3 as well. Have something to do with engine in my opinion. Deathcalw for example spawned inside Sloan depending of direction from which I approached so it must be bug.

Somebody claimed that creatures spawn at the spot where they die but while possible, it does not explain all those strange spawns.

But then there are cases when I run in to dead creatures all around wasteland and there seems to be no obvious reason for their fate. I also noticed that if you reload and go to the same spot, creature might be alive. Either engine spawns dead or kill living creatures sometimes on purpose of creating atmosphere or something goes wrong. Like spawning that creature too high over ground which is then killed by fall. With all the glitches and bugs this engine has (dead bodies struck underground and/or getting deformed and "dancing" around) I'll go for second explanation.

In your case, unless you don't care about Pete, you should try to load save far enough from Goodsprings. If Pete is still dead, try approaching Goodsprings from different direction. Or you can use console to bring him to life if you are on PC. (I wonder how somebody can play this game at something else than PC because all those bugs).

- Creatures might migrate. It's a bug.
- When you initiate a conversation but run away instead of talking, the guy will try to follow you across the map. Also a bug.

I went into Nipton early in the game once and all the Legionaires were dead. The only Legionaire who met me was the leader. He went through his routine and walked out of town with no one else in tow. Meanwhile, I looted all the bodies lieing around :celebration:

I've had a Deathclaw Alpha actually spawn near the Entrance to Hidden Valley. I was wondering why the Bark Scorpions were running away from me since I was only LV 1 well that was the reason.

I haven't seen enemies spawn inside of Goodsprings but then again I don't usually go back there once I've done everything in that town.

Ugh, reminds me of the guy from Megaton who bought your scrap metal in F3. He always ending up dying inexplicably in my game - presumably by falling off a ledge.

Ive almost got the opposite to this,
When i got to the tribal village, the two supposed "burned corpses" were running around the village like they were being chased by something.
Was fairly creepy.

I had one of the settlers in Goodsprings cave spawn alive while most of the coyotes were dead. I am not sure if it was bug or not.

Bah, most of that's nothing.

Just going to complete "Campfire on a Trail", when I saw a Coyote attacking Sunny Smiles. No problem, couple of shots and it's dead.

Next thing I know the game has glitched enough to drop a Giant Radscorpion smack bang on top of us. 30s later and the three of us are dead...

The only non-child essential character I have come across is Victor, and only early in the game.
