Random world mod...

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 8:52 am

I don't know if this is feasible or not, but I read some about people planning mods to increase the size of Skyrim, and thinking about that I realized for maximum replayability it would be sweet if someone could make a random world generator. I know it would probably be fairly difficult and perhaps not possible, but after playing skyrim and using some of the mods already out (without the CS even having been released yet) it seems like skyrims most limiting property in regards to playing it over and over and having different characters is that the world will always be in a cold climate and we will always be in Skyrim. You could add new climates and new regions, other dimensions, etc. Perhaps someone could even recreate the entire world of the elder scrolls... As I write this i realize it probably won't happen but I was just thinking it would be sweet. Oh well.

Based on Oblivion mods, other lands are highly likely. Hopefully present-day Vvanderfell :D

A random world generator... unlikely. The engine has enough issues with everything balanced manually. Making things random... nah.

On the other hand, random dungeons COULD be possible. Build "rooms" with set entry/exit points, and mix and match. I don't know what scripting/programming this would take, but it sounds a tad easier than an entire random world :)

Other lands? Yup. I'm making my own massive land.

Random land generation? Nope. It would be far too buggy, it couldnt have quests, I'm sure plenty of objects would be poorly placed or floating. Unless you made smaller templates that it randomly scattered about, but then you have 4 ruins copy+pasted a thousand times to make a massive land. :(

Random rooms? As in randomly designed from the ground up? No. A random dungeon that connects a bunch of rooms together randomly? Sure. But that would be bad. Part of level design is 'flow' and randomly strapping rooms together would create a horrid flow, and after your 2nd dungeon like this you would stop playing...

Personally, I would not be interested in randomly-generated landmasses, at all. I am interested in handcrafted landmasses and, as malko050987 says, these will sure happen in time.

Pre-created rooms connected together randomly was what I meant, yeah. But you're probably right, it wouldn't work as well as I imagine it :D

Yeah, in theory it sounds great, and it wouldn't really be hard to do. The issue is level design. That cut outs like 90% of it, and only like 1/100 randomly generated dungeons would be cool or satisfying.

I remember using the terrain generator with the Oblivion CS for a mod I never finished. It generated trees, shrubbery, rocks, ground textures, etc. based on parameters you set up. I always began with the regional parameters Blizzard used, and changed things to suit my taste. Of course, you have to go back and fix some floating shrubs, and fiddle with placement, but it moved the land creation process forward quickly for the generic landscape between places of interest. You have to build a height map for it to work with first. A totally random mod from nothing is impossible or indvisable, because it would look silly, but the random tools can help with certin parts of the worldbuilding. I was skeptical at first, but the results were good enough to work with once you learned how to tweak.
