reading books- more than one question

Post » Sun Oct 26, 2008 5:54 am

i could probably just save my game before i try this myself but i figure i would ask anyway.
if my lockpick skill is 80 and i read a lockpick book +10 skill i will have skill now of 90 for a limited time.
BUT if i read 2 books @ +10 each can i get to 100 skill or is it only 1 book at a time? :whisper:
thanks for any info/help :goodjob:

I believe skill magazines do not stack, so you won't get twenty skill points. However there is a perk that gives you an extra 10 skill points. It's either comprehension or retention. Let me go check the wiki and I'll edit my post.

Edit: Comprehension will give you a 20 point bonus to skill magazines as well as an extra skill point taken from skill books.

Hope I helped.

Nope, sorry.
They don't stack. However, you could combine a locksmith mag (+10) with a chem like Mentats to get an increase.
While mags don't stack on eachother, they work great with chems, outfits (such as the FoA Lab Coat) and such.

*Edit*
Dang, Comrad beat me to it! :ninja:

Skill Magazine boost is just one at a time; I wasn't able to stack the boost.

You really want to choose the Comprehension Perk to double those numbers, early on is a good idea. I carried my books around until I took Comprehension. A Skill BOOK will get you +4 permanent boost on a skill and a Skill MAGAZINE will get you +20 on a temporary basis. :)

I don't think they stack. I think the "Comprehension" perk allows you to get double the effects from magazines, +20, and an extra point from skill books.

Speaking of skill books and magazines, why do they disappear when they are used? Are we to assume that the player reads the book until it's worn out? Does the player have an unmentioned skill, allowing to gain knowledge by actually eating the book or magazine?

I wondered about that as well.
I finally decided that my character just tosses them after reading. He gets bored easy, like me.
