As stated in the title, so far it seems from evaluating the skill trees of ALL the classes and ALL weapon abilities, DoT's seem relegated to being a melee only combat style. Upon hearing of this game I was giddy and knew from the start that given the option I would go for the traditional "Dark Caster" build. Good CC, life draining DoTs, and some damage or even pets on the side.
But looking at it now, the closest fit for my favorite and pretty much only play style is the Nightblade. And while the Nightblade an definitely be built to fit the mold for a "caster", the DoT abilities in their arsenal are melee ONLY. This is a major set back and discouragement form my preferred build, which involves getting away from the enemy and staying away from the enemy with CC and some gap openers and letting DoT's melt them and restore my health. It's a build that I've found I play best with.
After the underwhelming experience I had with magic in Skyrim, I had high hopes for some great variety with what kinda caster I could be in ESO, but as soon as I popped a look at some of the class skill trees and weapon skills, I could literally find no effective combination to come close to this iconic play style.
I know the game is in late beta, but I was wondering if anybody here felt this way?
To me, an established MMO players play-style is key to his or her enjoyment in the game. If I can't accurately reflect the way I want my character to play in a game all about choice, it just leaves the whole experience bearing a sour note.
Is there any reason why there was no apparent inclusion of long-ranged DoTs? It doesn't seem to be overpowered; from the looks of it, the nightblade is just as effective as putting distance between him and a target after applying DoTs that both heal him and even keep an enemy locked down while a DoT ticks away at their health, while a sorcerer's effective CC servers as HoT for the enemy. Why? Range has never really been much of an effective defense against enemies in PvP in any MMO I've ever played, not enough for such massive disparities to exclude Ranged spells from having DoT effects similar to melee equivalents.
Is any WoW Lock, Rift Lock, GW2 Necromancer disappointed in the lack of a soul-svcking DoT approach to casters?
I'm a sad sorcerer =(
