Recommend me some good mead

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 12:19 am

I see a lot of people are picking themselves up some mead to accompany their play.

I need some recomendations for some meads to pick up for myself.

as reference I usually drink dark beers and ales.

Go to a beekeeper. Most of the stuff you get in stores doesn′t even taste like mead.

I got a bottle of Chaucer's. It comes with mulling spices which I really like.

Just pour some honey in the alcoholic beverage of choice. Lazy mead.

Depending where you are (like Canada for example) it can be hard to find mead. YOur not gonna find it in a government liquor store, you have to go to a place that specializes in wine, that is my experience anyways.

If you live in/near Indiana, pick up some of Oliver Winery's Camelot Mead. It's pretty great, especially warmed up.

I'll probably be sticking with a brown ale. Gotta stock up on those Newcastles!

This is probably the silliest- but at the same time most awesomest idea in the history of mankind.

That's not mead. It's just a label he put on the bottle.

Good mead? That's like asking for some warm ice...there is none.

Hell with that! I've made good meads. I had a friend (may he rest in peace) that made a phenomenal apple cinnamon mead, and I have a bunch of friends that get together and make meads that blow me away. Though I have *never* had store bought mead that was even close to any of the homemade ones. Usually they kind of svck, or their horrible. So... there's that.

What?

Anyway...

I've heard Redstone Meadery makes some pretty good mead, but I've never had it.

Another viable option is hard cider. I don't mean Woodchuck (unless you like that kind of stuff). I mean the real deal. Scrumpy's Organic Cider is incredible. If you can find that at a liquor store near you, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's worth the price.

Well unless you are going to give the OP a recipe and pointers, I can only assume he will be obtaining this mead from a retail establishment.

What?
I'm only kidding. I'm sure he is very proud of his product.

I had a really great cranberry mead several years ago. Unfortunately, it was a homebrew, and the brewer has since moved out of state.

Luckily we have a great liquor store here in town with a huge selection of eclectic booze :)

I am easily affected by alcohol and don't like gaming while drunk, but I will try to find some really low alcohol beer or mead.

Usually beers with low alcohol percentage are light rather than dark and meady. ^^

Every mead I've ever tasted has been really cloyingly sweet. The kind of thing that makes me look at the glass suspiciously and ask "Vikings drank this?!" Were they compensating for not having lacy panties or something?

Am I just drinking poor quality stuff? Is there a spectrum of mead flavors and I'm just at the wrong end?

Our local wine shop carries both Chaucer's and Redstone. The fellow we always ask for recommendations said he liked the Redstone. The bit of fruit and effervescence cuts the sweetness.

If you live in one of the states listed on the side, you can easily order online from https://www.whitewinterwinery.com/. Tried their apple mead for the first time a few weeks ago and I'm hooked on it now. Really high quality stuff, very tasty.

Mead is a dessert wine, at the time honey was one of the only sweeteners available to vikings. It is supposed to be sweet :)

Some meads are drier than others. But still, it IS made out of honey. You can't expect it to be like a shot of Jack. Besides, real men drink sweet [censored] and don't give a [censored]. :mohawk:
