My Redguard character's name.

Post » Sat May 25, 2013 12:50 pm

When I was creating him, I searched for Redguard names but couldn't find one I liked. So I picked a word from the dragon language.

"Kroniid" (conqueror).

Of course, the Dovah tongue is a good source for character names, but I'm not sure if it does sounds good.

It certainly looks Redguard-ish to me. However, I do not pay much attention to Redguards so to others it may not fit. I just think it does after being around so many Redguards in Morrowind/Oblivion.

Good enough. My favorite Redguard names are Raoul and Amír.

Redguards originally had Asian sounding names, but they were later morphed into more Arabic/Moorish names. So anything that sounds Asian or Arabic should work. I don't particularly like Kroniid, tbh. It sounds funny.

Gaiden Shinji is the only one that comes to mind, but I do remember reading somewhere that they were supposed to be much more Asian influenced than they are now (which is already a lot, to be honest).

Well that's the thing. You can't really just take a TES race and apply one blanket race to compare them to. They're a mish-mash of whole bunch of different cultural aspects.

Oh, and here's a naming convention that Arena and Daggerfall used to randomly generate NPC names. You may get an idea;

Huh, I had the assumption he was Akaviri. Guess I was wrong.

That's what I was afraid of. After playing Skyrim for nearly 1000 hours, your patience is much shorter than it was when the game was fresh.

He's lvl 16 and I don't want to start over, even if I do have the habit of restarting characters (no matter how many hours I've invested into them) when something's bothering me.

But I've reached the point when I can't bring myself to do that anymore. Anyway, at least it seems there are both people who like it and don't, so that makes it neutral I guess.

Don't dishonor the holy tongue. If you want a Draconic name, you have some worshiping to do.

Really? Hm, I've never noticed that.

OT: I started a Redguard character last night, I just chose an Arabic name and changed some of the wording to get Damayah. Just do that, and you can get some really cool, semi-unique names.

Early and recorded Asian-sounding Redguard names:

Frandar Hunding's suffix of "no Shira". It means "of noble birth". "No" is Japanese for "of".

Emperor Hira

Emperor Oshiru

Gaiden Shinji

Kotaro

And if you really dig into it and break them down, the redguards are basically the descendants of an Atlantean-type civilization, anologous to black people, with a Japanese-style warrior and honour system (in fact, the way the redguards organize their militias and mercenaries and how they serve the rulers of their city, is remarkably similar to feudal Japan), with Ancient Greek-style rivalries and cultural groups, and with Greco-Roman/Spanish architecture, and unique names.

Here are Redguard names I've used/plan to use in my ongoing TES story "The Ruby Throne" and it's eventual sequel. Anyone reading this, feel free to use the list for inspiration or to find a name that appeals to you.

Male: Ailan, Akkad, Aluson, Amha, Amric, Asad, Ashada, Carus, Dael, Daes, Damon, Darius, Daron, Din, Djim, Djinn, Doyne, Dymon, Goren, Hakim, Iken, Imran, Jen(n)in, Jon, Jonas, Kai, Makonnen, Menelik, Morran, Nemic, Notaru, Rakita, Rapalik, Rashiq, Razim, Tahaar, Tarik, Tenere, Tado, Xerxes

Female: Amalia, Amira, Amsha, Anisha, Anora, Aub’kali, Chenarra, Eleni, Iman, Inaya, Karinda, Kiana, Menen, Nariah, Nela, Rakita
