What is Reflection?

You should rest and meditate on what you've learned.

Reflection tries to capture the spirit of previous entries of The Elder Scrolls series by making sleep meaningful again. With Reflection installed, you will have to sleep at least one hour in order to allocate your perk points.

When you sleep, you will have 2 real-life minutes in which to open your skills menu (once the menu is open, you can take as long as you want). When the 2 minutes is up, your perks are removed, and will return when you sleep again.

You can open your Skills menu and "Level-Up" and select a Health, Stamina, or Magicka upgrade without sleeping. After you select one, you will be exited from the menu system. You can return to the Skills menu at any time to view your skills and perks, but your free perk points will be unspendable until you sleep.

Reflection also adds over 20 level-up messages from Morrowind and Oblivion. I thought that they were very charming and thought-provoking, and it was a shame that they were not present in Skyrim. Well, now they are. You will receive a new level-up message when you sleep or "level-up" in the Skills menu. They will start happening once every level, then once every two levels, then once every 3 levels, until you receive the last message at level 50. For some examples of the level-up messages, please see the screenshots.

Requirements

Requires the LATEST version of the SKSE Beta, 1.06.01 (as of this writing). This is non-negotiable. If you do not have this installed, Reflection will not work. http://skse.silverlock.org/beta/skse_1_06_01.7z

Requires the latest version of Skyrim (1.7.7.0 as of this writing). I do not support older versions of the game.

How To Install

Just click "Download with Manager" on Skyrim Nexus and activate. Nothing to it.

How To Uninstall

Spoiler
I have made a quick, simple process to uninstall Reflection that returns all of your unspent perk points to you and will do no damage to your character. You just have to be able to follow these 4 steps.

WARNING: Failure to follow this procedure will result in lost unspent perk points. You have been warned!

Step 1: Open the console (using the ~ key), type the following, and press enter: set ReflectionRunning to 1

Step 2: Find a place to sleep. Sleep at least 1 hour.

Step 3: You should receive a message stating that Reflection is shut down. Press OK, and check to verify that you have the unspent perk points available that you would expect.

Step 4: Save your game immediately, exit, and uninstall Reflection.

FAQ

Spoiler
I installed your mod, but when I start the game, it immediately crashes. You do not have the latest version of Skyrim installed.

I slept in a bed, and got a big annoying SKSE warning message. You do not have SKSE running, OR you do not have the latest version of SKSE, which is 1.06.01 Beta. http://skse.silverlock.org/beta/skse_1_06_01.7z

Is SKSE really required? Does it have to be? Yes, it is required. Yes, there is no other way to implement this mod without it. If you have a problem with not wanting to use SKSE in the first place, that's not a problem I can solve, so please do not comment about it.

Is there any particular order I need to do things in to level-up now? No. You can level-up first (pick Health, Magicka, Stamina), then sleep, or you can sleep first, and then enter the level-up screen. it doesn't matter, and I have tested a lot of different possible combinations.

Is it OK to level up multiple times before I sleep? Yes, that is perfectly fine and has been tested. You can build up several perks and spend them when you get to a bed. Remember that you can select Health, Magicka, and Stamina upgrades without a bed.

Chesko, your mods are known to be script-intensive. Is this a script-heavy mod? Is it going to slow my game down? This is actually possibly the least scripted mod I have ever released. Everything is event-driven; there are no "always on" scripts in this mod that run all of the time. Things only run when you sleep or open your Skills menu. This mod will not affect your regular game performance, even in the presence of a lot of other scripted mods.

I didn't follow instructions and just uninstalled the mod without following the uninstallation procedure. Am I boned? Not entirely. Re-install Reflection, and load a previous save that had Reflection installed. Then, follow the uninstallation procedure. You should be fine.

Is this mod available on Steam Workshop? Will you ever make it available on Steam Workshop? No, this mod is exclusively available on the Nexus. I will not be making it available for Steam Workshop because this mod has an external dependency, SKSE. I have had too many bad experiences with Steam Workshop users that just click the Subscribe button, don't read the page, and complain to me later. I have had better experiences with users on the Nexus actually following instructions and understanding mod requirements. Re-uploading this mod to any other site is, of course, forbidden. Thank you for understanding and respecting me, and my decision.

Compatibility

Spoiler
Should be compatible with all perk mods. I do not edit any perks themselves.

May be incompatible with mods that directly affect how many available unspent perk points you have at any given time. If there are mods out there that do this, using them in conjunction with Reflection is probably a bad idea.

How To Report A Bug

Spoiler
I take every bug report seriously. Because of that, I need you to help me out by providing me as much information as you can. This mod is easy to use, but complicated to build. Commenting "I tried this and it didn't work, why is that??" is not going to help me solve your problem, and just wastes time.

In the comments or in a PM, please copy and paste the following templates into your post, and fill out all applicable fields. I will not respond to "please help me" posts that do not follow this procedure, and simply delete them or downvote them to Oblivion. You have been warned.

Feedback, general questions, and requests are always welcome and do not require a report. Just try to be smart about when a full bug report would be helpful to me, and when it wouldn't be. Thanks.

Bug Report
Exact Skyrim Version Number(ex: 1.6.91.0):
Description of Problem or Potential Conflict:
Where were you when this happened?:
What time in game was it when this happened (if applicable):
How reproducible is the problem (one time, occurs on demand, etc):
Do you use a script extender such as Script Dragon or SKSE? Which version?:
Any other information you may think would be helpful:

Thanks

Thanks to everyone in the Skyrim modding community that have supported me in my mod-making over the past several months. I appreciate all of it.

Thanks for reading this page! I hope it answered most, if not all, of your questions. If not, feel free to leave a comment.

I hope you enjoy this mod.

Interesting. I think I may just use this for my next run through the game since you made me realize I haven't used a bed in... I don't know how long.

Cool stuff! I'll give it a shot next time I make a character. Which is probably going to be tonight, since I obsessively make new characters.

Thanks! Would http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/1175 be considered a conflicting mod that affects available unspent perk points?

After reading what it does, it should be fine. It alters how many / how frequently you get perk points at level up, but does not modify your unspent perk points once you've been granted them.
