Hi guys.

Just bougth the game and is now stuttering my way through the intro not advancing further - so after 5 minutes googling on the net I get the overall message:
This game is not running, if you've got an ATI card...or what?

I'm equipped with a nice quad machine and an ATI 5800 series card running BF3 at ultra settings at the moment on a totally upgraded machine.

So what's the deal: Have I lost my money as it seems, that the programmers at ID has not patched this in the last 6 months or what?

Thank you very much in advance.

no, ati screwed up the drivers for this game several times - the blame is purely on them. I also have an HD 5850 (slight OC) with Catalyst 12.3 and the game is running without any GPU related issues.

Ok, but what's the plan then, when I'm NOT able to run the game - any tips?

Every driver on my rig is 100% up to date.

I respect that you don't have time Xaxxiron - what I'm really asking is:

I'm new so can anyone tell me, if ID is working on the ATI problem?
It surely can't be true, that thousands of gamers buying this game is being deserted by the developers...

Found this which is fuc***g far out when I'm running BF3 at extreme resolution!:

  • The AMD HDxx30 Series cards are cut down versions of the AMD HDxx50 cards and are designed as a Media card for HD Videos. This is why it won't run High-end Games and RAGE's engine is demanding. <- The Only way to resolve this is to buy a new Gaming video card, ex: HDxx50's or HDxx70's.

RAGE uses the company's new OpenGL based id Tech 5 engine.

Where BF3 uses Graphic card: DirectX 10 or 11 compatible

So you can't really compare the two and there playability.

RAGE System Requirements:

Minimum System Requirements:

OS: Win XP SP3, Vista, Win 7
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo or Equivalent AMD
Memory: 2GB
Hard Disk Space: 25GB
Video Card: GeForce 8800, Radeon HD 4200
Recommended System Requirements:

OS: Win XP SP3, Vista, Win 7
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad or Equivalent AMD
Memory: 4GB
Hard Disk Space: 25GB
Video Card: GeForce 9800 GTX, ATI Radeon HD 5550

Minimum requirements for Battlefield 3
  • OS: Windows Vista or Windows 7
  • Processor: Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or Althon X2 2.7 GHz
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Graphic card: DirectX 10 or 11 compatible Nvidia or AMD ATI card, ATI Radeon 3870 or higher, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT or higher.
  • Graphics card memory: 512 MB
  • Sound card: DirectX compatibl sound card
  • Hard drive: 15 GB for disc version or 10 GB for digital version
Recommended system requirements for Battlefield 3
  • OS: Windows 7 64-bit
  • Processor: Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Graphics card: DirectX 11 Nvidia or AMD ATI card, Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 or ATI Radeon 6950.
  • Graphics card memory: 1 GB
  • Sound card: DirectX compatibl sound card
  • Hard drive: 15 GB for disc version or 10 GB for digital version

But that's NOT the point - I'm well into all the recommended requirements!

I've messed with computers since my first ZX Spectrum 16K back in 1983, som I'm not some rookie in trouble here.

But hell - it all add up one thing: I'm screwed...

Not sure quite what problems you are having, but it is possibly to get the game running with a 5830, although to be honest I suspect that barring some new drivers from ATI and possibly a patch from ID upgrading the graphics card may actually be your best option. On the other hand, even newer ATI cards can still have problems.

Anyway, the info about the 5830 is a joke as youve pointed out. It is less capable than the 5850 no argument, but still runs most games without a problem. It does however have problems with Rage for whatever reason, a lot of people complained about it when the game was first launched, and I suspect gradually gave up as time went by and other games came out. I managed to complete the game using I think it was 11.10 or 11.11 drivers with the atioglxx.dll (placed in the main rage directory) from either 11.9 or 11.6 drviers as necessary, and the catalystAI turned off in the profiles.xml file. Having said that I don't imagine you will want to roll your drivers back that far to get the game working. So I won't bore you with details about that.

However, You may be able to get it working with the 12.1a drivers and the atioglxx.dll from the old 11.8 drivers. Try having a look at this thread: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2630729 I know their card isnt a 5830, but the problems they experienced seemed similar to the ones I had, and the fix they found (instructions in post 8) may help you. Worth a shot.

Cheers mate - finally some constructive input though you're right - why the he*l should I mess with and downgrade my drivers and rig, when EVERYTHING has worked for years...

I can't belive, that I've just spend cash on such a hyped game and now has to waste my life manipulating to get working!

Sorry but your the one that brought up twice how well your rig ran BF3 but can't run Rage as if you had no clue BF3 runs on DirectX where Rage uses OpenGL.
I'm not a ATI/AMD video card user, but I read enough to know ATI hasn't kept there OpenGL drivers up to date as they should have. For quite some time I read.
So you can't go blaming id for something ATI failed to keep up to date. They supposely released a driver at the same time as rage just to work with rage.
Buti was a big fail since someone didn't add some updates in it or posted the wrong driver so its been pretty much down hill from there for ATI users of certain cards.

Have a look around lots of post of people finding ways to get Rage working with there setup. Give full system specs of your rig, someone will surely try to help you.
But they'll need to know what your working with in full details to better assist. Define the detail problems you have as best you can.
