Remakes of old video games: Good or Bad?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 3:35 am

Another good remake would be the old PC game Wizards & Warriors. This game had a lot to go for but Activision just felt the need to chuck this on the open market before testing all the bugs out of it.

It depends on the game. Halo Anniversary was good because it's gameplay can hold its own even these days and the upgrades are a nice way to re-experience it. But there's some games where it just doesn't cut it to improve textures, like the Perfect Dark remake on XBLA, the gameplay is so dated and just doesn't compare to to other more modern offerings its not worth playing even if I did love it when it was new.
I'm not understanding your logic. 'It's old therefore it's worthless and [censored]? Sounds like the logic of a 15 year old who doesnt understand that the only difference between Record > CD > Ipod is method of convenient portability. (Yeah yeah, sound quality blah blah blah, not the point atm) I still play the old Harvest Moon games, but I don't find it's control schemes 'dated'. Nor do I find Fallout and Fallout 2 'dated'.

I wasn't saying it's "lt's old and therefore worthless" blanket statement I said it depends on the game, I enjoy plenty of old games. Perfect Dark is a first person shooter but by todays standards I didn't feel it was worth the remake at all.
I hardly think calling me a child and insulting my intelligence was necessary, I mean really grow up. If you disagree fine but there's no need of crap like that especially when I said nothing of the sort.

The one big thing they could have done to make that good -- Halo 1 online multiplayer (not Halo: Reach online multiplayer with Halo 1 maps), they didn't do. Last I checked Halo 1 worked flawlessly on the 360. IMO, that was the biggest money grab I've ever seen.

This is exactly the reason I did not buy it. Would have been nice to play Halo 1 with new graphics but at the end of the day I already had the original halo 1 on my xbox. If I have the single player game already there is no need to buy it again to play the online that is not even Halo 1 online.

Also did some just say something negative about Perfect Dark? *Gets out my gun ready...*

Perfect Dark was amazing for its time. Besides when I got it for xbox it was not for the whole 'new visuals' I mean come on you can disarm people! I mean wow! I think you fail to realise how good that game was to play when it came out, don't you want to play it again just a little? I'd rather play Perfect Dark than gears of war or any new fps. It's like me saying oh I don't like daggerfall because the graphics totally svck... um I'm sorry what?

You can't judge a game on graphics alone. A modern example is CoD MW3 the graphics are pretty much from 2007 and yet is one of the most popular games of all time. By that logic it would not be worth playing (Its not worth playing in my opinion but thats just me).

Umm I do realise how great it was back then. Did you not read my post? I'm saying it isn't that great today, I did want to play it again and then I did and realised it wasn't worth it because by todays standards it's just not that good. And I'm not judging it by graphics at all? I'm saying they should have done more than graphics because it didn't age well.

If a game was great "back then" then it is still great. It is your perception that has been altered, not the quality of the game.

The quality hasn't changed no but the standard by which I judge it has so yes I guess my perception has changed. Shooters today blow it out of the water so bad the only reason I have to replay it is nostalgia, that's why I think it wasn't worth just repainting it with some new textures; its just not fun game-play wise compared to other offerings. It was great then because that's all there was other than goldeneye on the 64 for fpses but theres so much improved over time when it comes to that kind of games I don't find it fun.

Like I said before though I don't think this applies to all old games, I can still rock Quake on the 64 just fine  I just feel that one in particular didn't age well.

While I completely disagree with everything you just said Br0sk1 I respect your opinion.

However I have to say that shooters today do not blow those old games out of the water, repetable enemies and shiny graphics don't impress me over true innovation. But I suppose this conversation has been echoed since games began and will continue to be repeated well into the future, I often find myself playing Perfect Dark over a generic fps title that does not have true character. (Alert!: Perfect Dark fangirl Warning!)

There are a lot of mods / indie games that are remakes of old games and they often look amazing. Just take a look at the Outcast mod, the Crash Bandicoot mod and the Mechwarrior mod, all for the CryEngine.
