Remove BoS without loosing karma? : Fallout: New Vegas

I've decided I want to side with either House or NCR. I approached the Brotherhood of Steel hoping for a peacefull solution, but I removed the collar they placed on me and things got ugly. Now they attack me, and in defense I loose Karma. How do I complete the quest for House or NCR without loosing a ton of Karma?

Finish the Still in The Dark quest and keep the elder thats already there instead of making Hardin the new elder, and there will be an option to make a peacful solution, but I think you will get some negative NRC reputation for it

Have you actually done this to see just how much karma you lose? Lots of bad karma acts have surprisingly low bad karma.

The easiest answer is to not remove the slave collar, though.

It does cost a lot of Karma, since everyone you shoot causes a loss. The sad part is after I cut off the collar, I went a did a few other things, so to re-load a save means a big loss of time. I tried sneaking in with stealthboys, but no luck there either.

Just curious... does karma play any other role in this game besides a title?
