This has always been annoying, and its definitely not conducive to the conceptual realization of free exploration in an open-ended game. You could end up with tons of quest items that you can't get rid of, which takes up valuable equipment space. I don't understand why they can't just let us leave them in our houses until we need them. I imagine it's their solution to prevent people from screaming when they discover they sold/destroyed/dropped some quest item they now need.
