Remove Stolen Status

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:41 am

Is there a way to make an item that appears (red) stolen revert status to reflect it being a normally acquirable item?

The reason I ask is because awhile back a large number of my weapons that I had ED-E hold onto for me disappeared. At the time I was baffled and frustrated (considering some were unique items). Later, after a little snooping, I miraculously and unexpectedly found all the missing weapons in the lockers at the Ultra-Luxe. I'd never taken ED-E or any other companion into the casinos before, but instead just made them wait in the Lucky 38 until I needed them (for wasteland venturing). Even though ED-E was waiting in the Lucky 38, the game for some reason still assumed he was with me while I visited the Ultra-Luxe at one point and magically confiscated the weapons from ED-E as well as myself - however, never returned those weapons to ED-E after I had left. So, after finding them in the cashier office lockers I was so glad that they didn't disappear because of some memory glitch, I happily retrieved them from the lockers and left. It wasn't until later when I placed them in my suite that I realized they were marked as stolen. I stole my own stolen weapons. Lame.

I tried a number of methods to remove the "steal" action when picking them up. Sold and re-purchased. Dropped in the Silver Rush and picked up (like the other weapons there). Carry them with me into a casino and leave it. Place them in a companion and enter/leave a casino. Replace them into the Ultra-Luxe lockers and then leave casino. Alas, nothing worked.

So, I'm wondering if anyone else has perhaps stumbled upon a method that could remove the stolen status from an item. I'm playing the PS3 version, btw.

This isn't exactly a significant problem but it is annoying and I would like to remedy it. Cheers!

No. You can't. I say this because it's the PS3 version. There doesn't seem to be any way to untag something "stolen" since it is, stolen. Also, there used to be a bug where ED-E would lose everything he was carrying when he was upgraded. Could of been one of multiple bugs, but on consoles you can't mod the game to fix it.

Sorry bud.

The only way I know of is to sell the item to a merchant and then buy the item back. I'm not sure if it works with ANY merchant tho, so be careful/save first.... however, Cliff in Novac would work, probably Chet in Goodsprings too.

Have already tried that, like I said. Didn't work. However I didn't try every merchant, so mebbe I'll try others. Thanx for your help, anyway.

Oh, sorry, missed that part of your post. :)

...when you sold/bought back, did you do it all in the same session, eg, sell the item, but then immediately bought it back without exiting the merchant screen? Because it's possible you have to leave the merchant screen then re-enter (talk to the merchant again etc) for it to work. Which would be one reason to use Cliff, since he keeps items you sell him for ages. Some merchants seem to "get rid of" what you sold them almost immediately.

Then again, maybe it only works on PC's & not on game consoles. I don't know why that should be, but it's possible I guess. I know Cliff worked for me on PC, and that was in the vanilla game, before I did any modding.

Edit: It's also possible that it works on 'normal' red items but that in your case, they have some special tag on them (because of the situation) that makes it not work. Maybe.

Here's what you can do for your non-uniques: Find another weapon of the same type and repair the non-stolen weapon with the stolen one. Won't work for uniques and you'll lose the mods you've added to the others, but that'll take off the stolen tag. Also, I would try what the lovely miss Crimson suggests above with cliff. Sell 'em, exit barter, leave cell, re-enter cell, re-purchase.

Selling, and then buying, from a merchant to remove the stolen flag only works with bugged merchants that place the items sold to them in their personal inventory.

Contreras then, right? Since he always wears the armor we sell him, he must be bugged like that. Go see Contreras.

The only weapons I'm talking about are the unique weapons. AER14, Weathered 10mm Pistol, Liberator... they all display the stolen status because I stole them back (which is rediculous) from the Ultra-Luxe. I already replaced all the other normal firearms that were cursed with the same status (even the modded ones).

I can't try Contreras, either, because I helped Lt. Boyd in prosecuting him....

Have you considered trying to steal them again? Maybe it'll reset the stolen flag. RPP them onto some wimpy NPC and them steal them back. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Just RPP them onto a disposable NPC and then kill them? A random Prospector/wastelander out in the Mojave should do the trick.

You can still trade with Contreras while he is in jail; he simply won't restock caps and inventory. I always get him jailed (easiest way to get This Machine without alienating anyone), but I rarely have the caps to buy all his stuff before that, so I just buy it while he's in jail.

Interesting. Think I'll try that than. Where's the NCR jail? I'll assume it's not the one near Goodsprings.

McCarran. Upstairs in the airport main concourse. To The right, I believe, across from where the captured legionaire is. In my game, he alsways stands against the far wall and I had to console activate the lock to get in to see him.
