Render window turns all white, becomes useless

Post » Mon Nov 19, 2012 12:22 pm

So in the last few days, maybe a week or so, at random times while editing things the render window will turn all white and cease functioning properly after that. The rest of the CK remains responsive and edits can be made to everything, and that included objects that should be visible in the render window. I can even blindly click on the all-white window and end up with something selected. It will even drag around, respond to double clicks, and otherwise act normal except I can't see anything.

Only exiting the CK at this point and restarting it works. Once this happens the render window is useless for the remainder of the session. This isn't a case of it suddenly not opening windows, because it can happen within just a few minutes of loading an area.

I haven't updated my video drivers in some time because Catalyst 12.8 doesn't offer anything that looks necessary to my setup. I'm currently on 12.6 and up until a few days ago, had zero trouble with this.

It's become an annoyance on all 3 installation folders I have, so it's not just an issue of one setup being corrupt or something. They didn't sneak some kind of silly stealth update down recently did they?

The all white render window happened to me once, the other day. I don't recall what else I was doing in the CK, and didn't notice if I could still select things. I was mostly just looking at things. I may have had another preview window for a actor open too. I have an NVidia card.

This happens to me like once every 6 weeks but I'm not sure what causes it. :/ (ATI here)

It will either be:

1) Memory (and possibly a leak or something in the CK) ... would probably only happen after you had used the CK for a very extended period of time
2) Out of date gfx drivers
3) Too new gfx drivers!!
4) A glitch in the gfx driver that the CK doesn't like (usually means a new set of drivers will fix problem when released)

Happened to me a couple of times, over the months, just assumed was one of the above and ignored.

Yes, but as I said, it was happening within a very short time frame and didn't involve any recent changes to anything. Memory use was well below the limits.

Then I suggest updating your drivers and hoping for the best? It sounds like something somewhere isn't cooperating, and that may be the only way to fix it.

OK, so ... if only you are getting this (not seen other reports ... not seen a stealth update, but haven't opened the thing today) then you got about three choices:

1) You have some very weird object in the cell you are editing that is causing issues (we found a very odd object, the other day, with massive collision bounds) so might be this ... but you would have to have the crashes only when such an object was displayed (do you?)
2) Your GFX card is on the way out (try playing an intensive 3D game for ages ... Skyrim should do) ... does the same effect happen?
3) You need to sweep out the insides of your PC ... dust is a killer
