Repairing 'I Put A Spell On You'

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 8:00 am

I'm at a bit of an impasse with the buggy monorail quest (the first and so far only bug I've run into). I went to confront the spy, killed him, took his codes, and now I'm experiencing the 'monorail blows up regardless of disarming bomb' bug. I'm stuck with a save game after I tell Hsu but before the monorail blows up, and no other recent saves. I really don't want the monorail to blow up.

Is there a way to use console commands to reset the quest? Something like "SetStage Quest08 10" and "ressurect"ing the spy? I am not familiar with the Fallout games' console nor GECK, so I'm hoping someone has the know-how to help me. I also notice that there is some sort of monorail timer 'quest', so I'm not totally sure whether resetting this quest will make that one go screwy.

Thanks muchly!

PS: I love the rest of the game.

EDIT:
I've tried the following:
resetquest 000e790f
*click on spy*
resurrect
tai
*leave tower*
tai

But it doesn't seem to be working. At 1am, when I enter the tower, the spy is either just standing next to the radio, or standing at the entrance to the tower. Even if I pickpocket the code, I can't make the game jump to the next objective. Any ideas?

Well, it genuinely doesn't seem to be a bug. If you talk to the General, you've doomed the monorail. The bug is being able to disable the bomb at all past that point. Quite silly, really. It may be undone, if you use a script to reverse the following:
set VMS08.bReportedCurtisOutcome to 1;
VMcCarranNCRTrooperMonorail1REF.Disable
VMcCarranNCRTrooperMonorail2REF.Disable
VMcCarranNCRTrooperMonorail3REF.Disable
VMcCarranNCRTrooperMonorail4REF.Disable
NVMonorailDoorREF.Disable;
NVMonorailDoorStripREF.Disable;
SetObjectiveDisplayed VMS08 40 1;
Set VMS08.bPlayerTooLate to 1;

but I have no idea how to write a script which would do so.

I've got it, if anyone is interested. You will need the GECK game editor for New Vegas.

1) Open GECK, go File>Data and tick the checkbox next to "FalloutNV.esm". Do NOT click 'Set as Active File'. Click OK and wait for it to load.
2) In the Object Window, expand 'Actor Data', then click on Quests. When they load, find the quest with the editor ID "VMS08". Double click it.
3) Click on the tab button labelled "Topics". It should open with "GREETINGS" selected. If it doesn't select "GREETINGS" on the left.
4) The 7th item ought to be "What happened?" (this is the greeting Hsu uses after you've reported the spy, but before you're reported the monorail blowing up). Click on it once.
5) At the bottom of the window is a text area labelled "Result Script (Begin)". Paste the following into it:
set VMS08.bReportedCurtisOutcome to 0;
SetObjectiveDisplayed VMS08 50 1;
Set VMS08.bPlayerTooLate to 0;

6) Click OK on the bottom-right of the window.
7) Go File>Save and make up a name for the file, it's not important. Make sure to save it in the folder GECK suggests (the Data folder under your Fallout NV game directory), and make sure to keep the ".esp" extension.
8) Close GECK. Open the Fallout NV launcher. Click on "Data Files". Tick the checkbox next to your new file, whatever it may be.
9) Load your game, and speak to Hsu. Just activate him, hear the greeting, and say Goodbye. Do not say anything else to him. Do not speak to him again until you disarm the bomb.
10) You should now be able to disable the bomb. It's in the air vent at the front of the train. Disable it and report to Hsu.
11) Exit the game. Open your Fallout NV game directory, go to the Data folder, and delete the mod file you created. Be careful not to delete anything else. Your file should be about 3 kilobytes.
12) When you next load your game, you should get a warning about missing content. That's fine, click OK. If you don't get the warning, you may have done something wrong.

All done!

Since you killed the spy, you should be in possession of a convenient NCR uniform to get past the monorail guards with. :) Your NCR reputation should also raise from 'Neutral' to 'Appreciated' (or whatever the appropriate jump is if you've aligned yourself differently).

Sadly, the mini-mod didn't work for me. Still can't board the train to disarm the bomb (using ~tlc revealed it wasn't even there). Killed the spy, spoke to Hsu (only got the greeting as instructed), but still no bomb to disarm. Help!

Ok I found the perfect way to fix the problem (PC only)

You have to reset the quest using the console using this command:

resetquest 000e790f

1) Go talk to Hsu, he'll give you the quest again
2) Talk to the Captain, he'll tell you to ask one of two persons about anything suspicious
3)Talk to said person about breakins

4) DON'T TALK TO THE CAPTAIN about the suspicious visitor registered on the terminal. Just... don't talk to him at all.

5) Wait until 1am
6) Enter the control tower, he'll start to speak immediately to Lupa or something to the radio
7)Go back to Hsu
8)Disarm the bomb
9)The monorail won't start by itself and blow up
10)Go back to Hsu and he'll tell you he'll put Curtis in custody and you've done a good job

In the end, the only thing that breaks this quest is if you speak to Curtis about the mysterious visitor from the terminal, if you do, he'll stand idle infront of the radio for hours on end.

Are you positive you're at the stage after you confront and kill the spy in the tower, but before you disable the bomb or the train leaves the platform? The mini-mod shouldn't touch the bomb's location at all.

It kinda works, but the monorail still blows up.

Really? It worked fine for me. The monorail is not even supposed to leave the platform after the script runs. If it does, it means the script hasn't changed "bPlayerTooLate" like it was supposed to; you may have done something wrong. I've tried the 'resetquest' method (I mention it in the first post), but that tends to send things a little screwy. In my game Curtis stopped doing anything so I couldn't spy on him, my companions started disappearing/appearing all over the place, and the save game screenshots showed the game is having trouble adjusting (the screenshot would show the inside of my head, or be blank). My method is designed so that it doesn't abruptly end/screw with any running scripts, since I thought that may risk an unplayable save file later on. But if it worked for you, I guess both routes are valid.

I think so? I followed the spy into the tower, got the completed message, killed the spy, talked to Hsu, did only the greeting thing, nothing else, and then went to the platform. Could not get into the train, just had the option to ride it.

Have you spoken to Hsu before loading the mod? The convo where he says something like "The spy was messing around with the monorail earlier! Get there, quick!". You need to have that convo before running the mini-mod.

Why are you killing the spy at all?

Stealthboy in behind him, listen to radio convo from bottom of stairs, creep up, pickpocket code from spy, run to train, disarm with code..

then talk to hsu..

You don't need to waste a stealthboy on him. You can eavesdrop on the conversation from the door if you enter hidden. For everyone else that is confused, you MUST eavesdrop on the conversation in order to be able to save the monorail. Once you get the acknowledgment in the quest window, you can kill him and get the code. Do not talk to Hsu. Go directly to the monorail. At this point you will actually be able to enter the train and you can find the bomb in the vent. Disarm it and THEN go talk to Hsu. The game DOES have its share of bugs, but I've gone through about 30 hours of it so far, and the quests seem pretty solid. A few hiccups here and there, but any time you run into something quest-wise, before you think it's a bug, keep dinking around. There's one I'm still not sure of (the wild card mission where you have to go to the fort), but even that may be because I haven't looked everywhere.

My situation: killed the captain, and even I diffuse the bomb, the monorail still explodes. Tried the mini-mod: didn't worked. Tried through console commands (resetquest & resurrect), but to no avail. The captain just stands near the radio, and doesn't trigger the radio talk.

For some reason, I just can't let this go. It there any way to disable the explosion at all (temporally), or something that fixes this bug? If I end the quest, stating that the monorail has been destroyed, will it stay that way, or will it be repaired after some time? It's a shame that because of a bug, we loose a way of transportation...

Edit:
Just retried using the fix/mod Hexagon1 mentioned/created. It works. Although, as I said before, and elaborating a little, the problem was: I could diffuse the bomb, but if I step out of the monorail, it starts and explodes. The solution? Fast travel out of there and report to Hsu. Quest completed and monorail intact.

Just remember, this if because I killed the captain, which means, I only tested the fix only in this way, or path. And the save I used was in no way modified, right entering the monorail station, but before it started obviously.

Step by step:
Create the fix/mod;
Enable it on the launcher;
Load the save;
Diffuse the bomb;
Fast travel to any location (nearest recommended);
Report to Hsu, choose the right dialog and the mission is completed.

As as Hexagon1 said, then you can delete the fix after exiting the game.

Hope it helps. Oh, and thanks Hexagon1.

It is possible to disarm the monorail bomb (in the vents) with skill or the code but it will have no effect the monorail will still blow up that is definitely bug fast traveling away didn't work hsu had no topic for ending the quest

The fast travel trick only works with the mod fix enabled.

CONFIRMED

After catching the spy talking to the legion LISTEN to his report, he says he put the 'materials' on the train. Wait for him to finish this report and the EAVESDROP condition will update. Kill him then.

SKIP TALKING TO HSU AND GO STRAIGHT TO MONORAIL TRAM

disarm bomb

then (AND ONLY THEN) go back and tell HSU. Full update on quest, no bugginess later.

Hexagon1, any chance you can actually post your modded file up somewhere for us to download and use? I tried to install GECK to follow your directions but have had nothing but problems and cannot get it to edit the files like in your directions. All I want to do is not have the monorail blow up, but I have already killed Curtis in my game. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place on this quest.

Ok, so here's what I have on my hands now m8s.

Did the quest as it was implemented. Listened to radio talk, killed capt., told general, disarmed bomb... but woops, monorail still blew up. This wanst new after I read about the bug.

Now the situation is that I dont have a save from b4 the quest, only one after I removed the bomb but the monorail still hasnt blown up. I reseted the quest, installed the mod, did everything as was posted (listened to radio, killed/not killed capt., talked/not talked to general) but whatever i do, now i CAN'T disarm the bomb. I click it, try input code/disarm with science, but nothing happens. Even tried removing the mod thinking I screwed something up, but no luck. Can't disarm the thing again.

Any tips maybe? Something I still might need to reset?

(btw: when I resurrected the capt he had no problems talking through the radio again)

You just told us that your post was after you removed the bomb. The mod that he had you create alters the dialogue of the guy who you talk to after you disarm the bomb. What you need to do is to fast travel away from the monorail in your save. Trying to walk back will result in it exploding. Then you can go back and report your success and it will allow you to finish the quest without the monorail exploding.

Maybe the post seems a bit misleading. So here is what I did, in chronological order :)

1, Took quest
2, talked to whoever the arrow ponted me to (the capt too)
3, went to tower around 1am
4, evesdropped on radio msg
5, killed captain
6, talked to general
7, went to monorail, disarmed bomb
7,5 used fast travel to not loose monorail (otherwise it blew up if I tried leaving)
8, installed mod!!
9, reset quest
10, resurrect capt
11, did the steps 1-4 again
12, From here on I tried a lot of the above mentioned ways to keep goind as in: Tried by both killing and not killing capt after the radio msg (waited for q to complete and go to next phase), after that tried by both talking to general now (only greeting him and saying nothing but goodbye) and going straight to the monorail
13, I cant deactivate the bomb now, I can click it, the window for disarming it or leaving it comes up, I click input code or deactivate with science but nothing happens, quest status will not change to completed, and if i talk to general again there is no new dialogue.

So basically I can not complete the objective to (again) remove the bomb from the monorail to make the quest status change. Any tips for that? Should I reset something specific? Hope im not doomed yet with this quest.

ps: on a side note, is there a console command to complete a specific quest (part of the objectives or the whole q including the last obj ) ??

here's hoping they patch it so you can still disarm the bomb even if you killed the spy. It glitched on me so i didn't hear him speaking on the radio even though i was hidden.

and i ironically and unknowingly saved with a view of his headless body on the floor.

So i reset the quest, then ressurected the spy, but now after i've done everything which has to be done he just stands in front of the radio doing nothing and when he spots me and i kill him, it'll fail the quest, does anyone have an idea how to fix it? I'm now unable to complete this quest, just stucked in a tower and everything will fail it.
