REQ: Dishonored Combat

Post » Sun Oct 21, 2012 12:51 am

I just completed Dishonored last night, and it got me thinking. If Skyrim had swordfighting the way it did in Dishonored, I don't think it would have failed in combat, as hard as it has. I'm not talking about abilities, but the actual movement of both your character, AND the enemies. If someone with extreme talent wants to take up this task, I think you'd bring to the table what Skyrim was missing.

Dont bet on it. Im fairly sure the engine would need reworking to allow it. Its not a simple case of animations. Plus, if it were just animations, few people have the skill and time to rework every animation in the game.

That said, I think Skyrim's combat is just fine.

What? The combat is terrible. It takes no skill to fight an enemy, and most of the time to win a fight, you just slash at his feet and he's dead.

I'm well aware of the effort that would have to be put into this, but if people could redo the entire land of morrowind, for Obliivion, then someone with enough skill and time, can surely make the combat more challenging, and by that, I don't mean more health and stronger damage from enemies, which is all it really is on the hardest difficulties atm.

Have you tried Duel or Deadly Combat? They aren't overhauls in terms of scope but they rework the combat to be intrinsically more challenging.

Is it only for me though? Or do the enemies get an overhaul too? Because that's what I liked about Dishonored. They actually defended themselves, etc. Instead of just coming at you blindly.

If you want sensible-realistic combat for Skyrim - then http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1411818-duke-patricks-archery-and-heavy-weapons-combat/ is the go to solution.

Another vote for Duke's mod. Wouldn't play Skyrim without.

I use Deadly Combat and it does things to both you and npc's. They will block more intelligently and staggering has completely been reworked. Archers are a force to be reckoned with when every arrow that hits you staggers you if you dont block it. That combined with ASIS' potion capability where npc's have a chance to spawn with potion(s) in their inventory that they will use in combat. Yeah you can have some very challanging situations with those two running.

Probably be easier when I toss out an update within the next month or so to clear out existing bugs and clear up the DLC support.

Might be interesting to have a look at, but I want something that doesn't just benefit myself. It definitely would be interesting to see someone take up the task, at least where it comes to combat movement. Stronger hits with bows, etc, are great, but the slashes and so forth are very basic.

Mmm I sort of agree...combat for staright up melee is not that much fun, you can overpower enemies easily, but for non fighter types it is challenging and fun, especialy at higher dificult levels

Duke Patrick is all about improving NPC AI and combat mechanics.

Don't let a precursory glance by your only information. Spooky has been modding combat for this game series for at least 6 years and has plenty of real world combat experience to draw upon. Including having written a book on medieval combat - which is amazingly detailed from a strategic point of view with much physics as the backbone as to why certain maneuvers and strategies are used.

He also is a dedicated modder who doesn't just drop some game changes and then check out for 6 months. My bet is he'd find Dishonored combat wanting.

Wait, what? The game hasn't even been out for six years, lol.

EDIT: Nvm, I read that wrong. :P
