[REQ} Stop rain from falling through buildings already

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 2:16 pm

This was my biggest "wtf Elder Scrolls" in Obvlivion, and it's the same in Skyrim.

If it's raining or snowing out and you're not inside a new instance (see a loading screen) and you're under a rock, a bridge or whatever... it just rains or snows through the geometery. It did the same thing in Oblivion and it was so obnoxious that I stopped playing.

You stopped playing over that? Yikes. Oblivion had a lot more issues that were more annoying than that, IMO...

It's a limitation of the engine, if I remember correctly. Though it seems like there was a mod that managed to fix it...don't remember if it was for Morrowind or Oblivion though.

Yeah, it might seem a bit extreme, but it was such an in-your-face problem that I just couldn't handle it lol

There was recently a thread concerning this and the outcome was it would be too difficult to mod, with one easy option being disabling rain altogether when player is under a building or rock but that doesn't really make things better,,,

Its sad that this wasn't fixed. You'd think a developer like Bethesda that prides itself on creating the most immersive world would of taken time to fix this annoyance.

Doesn't really bother me to be honest. Most of the time it's snow and I just pretend it's blowing in under stuff...

Wait, this still happens? They could fix it for Morrowind but not for Skyrim?

Gamebryo shows its proud heritage! As has been said, this simply isn't doable.

Also, it was fixed for MW? I don't recall that : /

The real problem with precipitation (rain, snow, or whatever) in The Elder Scrolls games (sans Arena & Daggerfall, which didn't have this issue) is that the precip is tacked onto the interface, and not a world item, such as rocks or swords. Oblivion had it that some NPCs would react to the weather (not going outside, seeking shelter, etc), so Skyrim could do the same, but that's about it.

Modding to fix this would be beyond even the CS itself, as it would require a near complete re-write of the engine.

It's puzzling to me because I was under the impression we would have no rain under overhangs and the like. Never played FO but could swore somebody said it worked like that in FO. But what's really strange is why give NPCs AI behavior to go seek shelter when it starts raining if they are still going to get rained on when under the shelter?

The MW Code Patch added collision to the precip particles, yes.

I'm still holding out hope that Reneer or someone will be able to do something, anything, to fix this #1 immersion-breaker ever.

I've always wondered about rain in these games. So long have I played these games and it still eludes me... Is it just a model that follows your or does it actually fall dynamically? Because if it falls dynamically as a particle wonder if you could make it stop falling on objects when it collides with them..

My understanding is that it's just a particle emitter that follows the player around.

couldn't you replace the interface rain and show textures with something transparent, and then script storms to spawn particle emitters?

Idk if anyone noticed for the expansion Honest Hearts for FNV there were some little mobile homes in the valleys that had a scripted activator box thing over them that made the rain not go through the ceilings.

To stop playing a great game for what would be listed as a trivial issue is silly, but it's your choice.

What they should do is just disable all rain when you're under an object, and for it to start again as soon as you leave the object.

I haven't stopped playing, and I think it would be silly to do so, but this is not a trivial issue for me.

I've said that would be an acceptable compromise; Reneer mentioned that getting it to stop when it's supposed to is relatively easy, but getting it to start again is much more difficult.

It's easier said than done. Name just one other game with Dynamic weather of this magnitude in a seamless fully open world of this size. They are all linear corridor instanced effects. Yeah there are better looking games and they look that way because of how they are made.

When somebody else does a better job of making a TRUE open world game than Beth then we can raise our expectations but until then Beth has the best game in town despite all of it's flaws. Hehehe, They have ZERO competition.

Even Minecraft has this working. You can even see the rain outside while taking shelter from it under a tree.

Hire Notch to program your weather Beth!

Wow is an online game. The Witcher is a corridor game. Minecraft has no structure(pure sandbox) and worse than N64 graphics and mechanics. Bethesda has NO competition...period.
