request: please improve the save game system

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 12:07 pm

if the spirit of the elder scrolls games are to 'play as you want to play' then people such as myself are really struggling with the save game system.

I have my main character who is in a guild but it breaks the immersion and spoils a bit of the fun to think of him in all the guilds. I would prefer creating other characters, if for nothing else to go through those quest-lines.

A 'normal' save-game system where you can labe the saves would be adequate. A save-game system like Mass Effect 2 would be ideal.

Please consider doing this.

Respecfully,

It tells you the name of the character, his level, and some other stuff when you go to the "load save" menu. As long as all of your characters aren't named the same thing, you should be able to tell them apart.

Yup, I'd love to see the saved game routines improved as well.

Personally, I'd like to see profiles added so that I could add a profile for each of my characters, then have the saved games saved into that profile only, as it is now trying to keep track of the latest saves for each character is a bit of a pain after a very short amount of time trying to keep multiple copies of saves.

Also, find it rather annoying that when I go to save as (let's say save 14) the game asks me if I want to overwrite that save, I choose yes, and then find that the save is now named 15...

I could almost bare it if the overwrite would keep the same name (i.e. 14 or 15 or 17 etc) so that I can then at least remember which save is which, but when it constantly overwrites and gives a new number it's just confusing to keep track of.

It seems that this is more a console style save system than a PC style save system what with not being able to name my own saves, and have true overwritting capabilities that maintain the same exact name. Then again it's been a long couple of years since I've played a modern console game so maybe they're not so antiquated any more.

Please improve the system, it's really lacking (IMO)

I doubt that Bethesda will change it, same system that they have used since Oblivion
You can use the console to make named saves
open console with tilde key, type save "name of save"

If it is that *(&#*() easy, WHY can't Bethesda implement it in the PC version of game??????

PC players have been asking for named saves since Oblivion, thru FO3,and FONV, and Bethesda still won't be bothered to do it!

since only pc gets to use console arguably it is in the PC version of the game :D
but I agree, would be better if it was an improved save function rather than something obscure like a console command

By "console" he isn't talking about the Xbox or PS3. He is talking about the command window that comes up when you press the '~' key on PC. It's called the "console" because you can input commands on it.

Type 'save NameIWantForMySave' for example and it will save the game and list that save in your menu by that name. And you only have to do it once. From then on you can save over that save from the normal save menu and it will keep the custom name you gave it.

I agree. It would be best if each character had their own save folder, but I'd settle for being able to name the saves. I already have 2 characters and having each of them with saves called "Skyrim" makes me have to be very careful not to accidentally overwrite one of them. What I haven't done is check if I can save from the console ala Oblivion (pc user here) because there at least you can name the saves.

Can you guys be more nit-picky?

The save game problem doesn't impress me as being at all nit-picky. It is a serious irritation that, if what I have read is true, would require very little for Bethesda to fix.

Is there some way that I can save a game with multiple words in it's name, i.e. save 10. high elf game instead of save 10highelfgame using the console save function?

Yeah, far as I know the console '~' counts everything after the word 'save' and a space as the save game name, so you should be able to type 'save My awesome elf character' and the save game name in the menu would be "My awesome elf character".

In a way Skyrim is worse than Oblivion. At least there you could have multiple characters by changing the save directory in the INI file.

Skyrim doesn't seem to have that option.

So just keep my different characters organized outside of the game and move the save files around when I want to switch.

In the case of this release they bothered to perfect nothing

Try Dragon Age : Origins for a GOOD save system

And a decent User Interface on the PC

Bethesda needs to take some lessons from Bioware

Did I even mention DA2?

No!

(But even DA2 still had a much better UI than Skyrim)

Doesn't seem to work, it will tell me something like invalid string (let me go get the exact wording)...

Unknown variable elf for parameter integer
when I try
save high elf game

So seems it has to be all one word unfortunately.

The solution is to use quotation marks around the name of the save as
save "10. High Elf Save"

I sure hope they don't try to follow Bioware's gameplay style! Linear games svck.

Maybe it's just a PC glitch thing that they will pass, but some of my overwrites don't actually overwrite. I have "Save 13" that I try to overwrite (save for a particular character) and the game saves, but "save 13" is still there. Just another save is made.

OP: I've been asking for named saved games since I picked up OB. They had it in MW but I guess the forgot how to do it in the years inbetween.

I hate how it erased some of my game saves. I was an level 15 assassin with great stats and high in the DB questline and I started a 2nd character and it wrote over my assassin character. My last saved game on that character was at level 11. Made me mad...
