Research on Baby Boomer Gamers - The Elder Scrolls

Post » Sat Dec 01, 2012 12:05 am

Hi there,

I’m a game art design student at the Mad-Fac School of Arts in Genk, Belgium.
One of our courses is Game Psychology, for which we are currently studying different topics in game development, applied to certain game demographics.
The subject our group (4 people) is working on is that of ‘Baby Boomers’ (people between the ages of 40 and 60) and Role Playing Games. We have already done some research on the subject and most results indicate that Baby Boomers present quite a large group of the gaming community and that they’re not sufficiently represented in the gaming industry (the fact that the gaming industry focuses too much on male adolescents).
According to earlier results they also tend to search for a mature and helpful community, where they can share their stories and memories of games and certain problems they have with new games, without being laughed at.

For our research we chose ‘The Elder Scrolls’ series because we think this game is ageless.
That’s where you come in (if you’re interested in helping us out of course ;) )!
We would like to know:

- What you think about ‘The Elder Scrolls’ series in the context of a Baby Boomer experience (is the
game suited for advlt gamers?)

- What you think about ‘The Elder Scrolls’ community (is it friendly and mature and thus suited for
Baby Boomers?)

- What, according to you, could make the series more appealing to advlt gamers?

We would also like to keep a messaging contact with you, possibly to ask a few more questions or specifications on your answers (again if you’re willing to ;) )
If you want to participate but remain anonymous, please add that to your reply!
Our current findings can be found our blog, which we’ll try to update every few weeks (if we find the time, our school tends to put a lot of pressure on us).

We thank you for your participation! :)

I'm 44, but I'm not sure I qualify as a "baby boomer": I think they're about 20 years before me. I'd say the Elder Scrolls series is just fine for advlt gamers, though since I started gaming (pre-teen) I can't really say I've noticed a significant age-related component to games; it's more a case of if I like it, I'll play it. In terms of community, the only thing that strikes me as somewhat odd is that there aren't more of my contemporaries online: when I was growing up my my teens, lots of people were avid gamers and many of those I've stayed in touch with still are, but they never seemed to have got the forum bug really.
