[WIP] Restored LAPD Riot armor / HERMES armor

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:45 am

Considering how this is meant to be something that was used by riot police, it seems that in this case the two are more-or-less one and the same. Just look at the chest area of the Ranger Coat! If the armour looks like that underneath, then evidently the rest of it (as shown here) is a logical expansion.
Plus, "the world of tomorrow" seems to only apply to lifestyle - after all, have you ever seen a "world of tomorrow"-esque army? The answer to that is, well, no. Plus, considering how the world ended around 2050, I'd say they had reasonable time to catch up to us armour technology-wise. It also can conveniently explain why the guns work so well! Although... the Combat Armours in the game kinda send mixed messages as to what they're aiming for, though. The F3 armour looks like modernistic armour, sure, but the NV combat armour looks like something out of a cheesy 80s movie. Perhaps earlier. And then the riot armour shows that the LAPD had some damn good stuff - which fits into the whole "police state with civil unrest" thing before the war.
All in all, it should be fine as long as it's not http://www.gamingdaily.co.uk/2010/space-marine-marine-in-space/ armour. Disregarding the similarity to Commander Shepard's armour, but that armour is meant to look like it's from a different sort of "world of tomorrow" anyway.

Hm.. yeah I understand, I wasn't criticizingly saying it like that, that was just a general statement, but yes, your right, I understand and that actually makes perfect sense! Btw I laughed at the space marine link, I was expecting a link to something from starcraft 2 though.

It wasn't my first intention do add another version with normal pants ingame but I must say it looks good, maybe better than the original? But it kind of takes away the riot police look but it does look like a post war outfit. I just took the pants and gear from my wastelander shirt and put it on the upper body. I also wanted to stay away from the pants and gear cos I use it in almost all of my mods.

Anyways;

I still have to skin it etc...

I'm going to redo the skinning on the original mesh a little first because the neck area seems to be clipping a lot in certain poses...

Damn!

They -both- look excellent... and the variety between them is actually fairly common among advanced tactical units. One might go in with the full body suit... the guy next to him might go in wearing the more maneuverable fatigues with the tactical cases for carrying additional ammunition. It all depends on the officer's specialty, the situation, etc.

If I had to say I -preferred- one, though? I'd still say I like the armored leggings best... but only because I like the idea of the 'full' set of armor.

Anyhow, amazing work as always.

I can't wait to get my hands on the stuff, personally.

Will there be a version with a coat, or would you use some other mod for that?

That looks amazing!
I'm very picky when downloading mods, usually if a mod is something I can make on my own, I just make it on my own. The combat pants version is something I'd definitely download. Can't wait!

Thanks for your comments guys!

I finished all the models right now I'm setting up all the files so I can easily zip them and put them up for download. This is what I have so far;

Meshes:

- Fully armored mesh
- Normal pants mesh with holsters.

Textures:

- weathered, dark version
- weathered, light version

- clean, dark/black version
- clean, light version

All dark, light, weathered and clean versions come in these colors; Black, Blue, Grey, Green, camo Green, Yellow, Orange and Red.
Also the pants and holsters come in a dark and a light version.

So that's:

2 models and 64 textures lol?

Anyways I am not going to put all 64 versions ingame because it would mean complete chaos. The mod is basically going to work like my wasteland shirt armor; There will be three slots ingame, and there will be three folders that correspond with these folders in the FNV data folder where you extract the files. The player can just simply drag and drop the textures they want in one of the folders. Which means that you are able to create up to three different gears ingame. So for example if you want a fully armored dark red version as gear one you put the fullarmor mesh in the Gear_01 folder in the meshes directory. And you put the dark red textures in the Gear_01 folder in the textures directory. I'll write a small tutorial on how to do this for people who really don't understand what I'm trying to say but it's nothing more than dragging and dropping files in the right folder. So people can fully customize this armor exactly the way they want. This way your companions can have different colors as well.

With the right amount of scripting, users can choose multiple installation options when installing a .fomod with FOMM.

if you have FOMM, you can create a fomod ready mod using the Package Manager. For example, let's say you have 2 folders which are as follows:

Cool Armor Black (folder 1)
coolarmorblack.esp
\meshes\CoolArmor\coolarmorblack.nif
\textures\CoolArmor\coolarmorblack.dds

Cool Armor Camo (folder 2)
coolarmorcamo.esp
\meshes\CoolArmor\coolarmorcamo.nif
\textures\CoolArmor\coolarmorbcamo.dds

In the Package Manager, there's a button to the right which says "Create From Folder", click that and then select Cool Armor Black folder

A new 'Cool Armor Black.fomod' file will be created which includes all the files in that folder. You can edit info to add descriptions and screenshot. Activating the fomod will automatically copy the necessary files to the \data\ directory. Also, deactivating the fomod will automatically delete the files from \data\

do the same with Cool Armor Camo folder and a new Cool Armor Camo.fomod file will be created.

you can then create an archive with .fomod files in it. Opening the .fomod files automatically launches FOMM and places the mod into the list, so that's pretty convenient.

So basically, from FOMM, people can activate/deactivate the options they want.

Your character's hair and skin textures in http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=38764 look awesome. I'm assuming you made them, so is there any chance you could release? That'd be so great.

Unfortunately I have no idea how FOMM works or scripting lol. it's really simple from what I read in some posts below this one is that the basics seem to work the same. The difference is that you have to manually drag and drop the files, which takes a 2 min extra... than if FOMM would do it.

if you have FOMM, you can create a fomod ready mod using the Package Manager. For example, let's say you have 2 folders which are as follows:

Cool Armor Black (folder 1)
coolarmorblack.esp

coolarmorcamo.esp
\meshes\CoolArmor\coolarmorcamo.nif
\textures\CoolArmor\coolarmorbcamo.dds

In the Package Manager, there's a button to the right which says "Create From Folder", click that and then select Cool Armor Black folder

A new 'Cool Armor Black.fomod' file will be created which includes all the files in that folder. You can edit info to add descriptions and screenshot. Activating the fomod will automatically copy the necessary files to the \data\ directory. Also, deactivating the fomod will automatically delete the files from \data\

It seems to work somewhat the same only with my technique you have to do it manually. Which works better for me and people without FOMM. Besides that like I said before it probably takes 2 minutes extra. I just finished a tutorial in such a way that even 5 y/o can follow so I guess I'll just leave it as it is. Otherwise I have to figure out FOMM again and I don't want people to be forced to download or use FOMM in order to use this mod. Besides that I put a lot of hours in creating this mod so the least people could do in return is to manually install it.

Your character's hair and skin textures in http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=38764 look awesome. I'm assuming you made them, so is there any chance you could release? That'd be so great.

Yeah I made it but the face is not going to be released and I'm working on the hair. I actually planned on releasing the hair last year but didn't because I started to work on this mod. The thing is that I completely have to redo the hair because my custom head is different from vanilla heads, which is unfortunately a boring, uninspiring job...so it might take some time before I actually release them lol..

Oh, alright. How would someone even begin to make a face like your character's? Could you point me in the direction of a tutorial or something maybe? Thanks.

Ok!

It has been a few days since I last updated this topic but I decided to take a break for a few days from this project because I worked so hard on it the last few days.
Anyways!

I made my final decisions on how to put this file up for download. The final version will have all the colors ingame by standard. However the dark/light weathered/clean versions work as retextures. So you can only have a dark or light version at once and a weathered or non weathered version. It's a lot easier than the previous file structure I had and I don't think there will be people who want to use all versions at once? You usually pick one or the other. However both Full [heavy] armor and Half [pants/boots/light] armor will be available ingame.

I thought about making a small quest to obtain this item ingame but I have never done such a thing in my life and I don't want to let you guys wait for another month for me to find out how to do that. So right now the idea is kind of lame but you can pick the armor off a dead corpse at the Goodsprings cemetery :)! Anyways to keep you guys entertained;

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f119/Geonox_2/Riotposter.jpg

So far I got all the file structures done, but I still have to make a version that works with the pipboy, since it's showing a lot of clipping right now. But hopefully itlll be less than a week....
