Return to Sender: Strange Issue

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:44 am

There is a weird non-critical issue with Chief Hanlon at the end of the Return to Sender quest line. When I tried to replicate it got even weirder.

Spoiler

When I choose to turn in Chief Hanlon at the end of the quest, he tells me go get a Ranger to arrest him, then starts his suicide speech when you cross the door threshold. I've had really weird issues with this. Sometimes he stops mid-speech until I move back and forth across the door threshold that triggered the suicide script. And when I tried to replicate this, he started repeating parts of his speech. While mildly annoying I was able to finish the quest, Just thought I should post this so it can be added to the list. Anyone else run into this?

By the way, anyone know who the voice actor is for Chief Hanlon? The voice sounded familiar and he did an awesome job, as is most of the voice acting in this game.

Kris Kristofferson.

It just plain doesn't let me finish the quest in this way. He gets into his speech and the game just crashes.. =/

I got a similar issue to this when I tried to complete the quest. He tells me to find him an escort, and I think ok, I'll go outside and look there.

He didn't get to finish his speech.

And now the door's locked, and the aforementioned threshold trigger seems to be gone now. (At least, it doesn't seem to be triggering.)

Is there a work-around for this? This is the one and only time I did not save within 20 minutes, and the next earlier save is 3 hours ago.

Issue exists also here but I noticed something different in there. It could be related or not, but I experience some FPS drop within that room and that happens when the NCR heavy troopers (wearing power armor) make their entrance.

It could be that they have been there for a long time, I just didn't enter that building before finishing the 'Return to sender' quest . . .

Given that Hanlen involves numerous triggers and dialogs, I can't find a simple way to use the console to return to previous steps. I think it's safe to assume there's no fixing it without some serious hacking into the profile, so I've just accepted the setback of 3 hours of playtime.

I hope this quest is fixed in the upcoming patch. What happened to me was the following: he walked into his office, we talked, and then I decided to turn him in, he recommended that I brought a ranger with me, then I walked out of the office and nothing else happened. The quest is still present in my quest menu despite all of its subtasks being grayed out. The situation now is that Hanlon is staying in his office locked and I didn't even hear his speech via the telecom. Even an earlier save didn't work. All the same happened.
