Rosetta Stone - Has Anyone Tried It?

Post » Thu Dec 06, 2012 7:03 pm

I have learning Russian for about 3 weeks now from material I found on the internet (mostly RussianLessons.net) and it has been working out fairly well so far. I also work with two Russians and they have pointed out a few errors in the stuff I was learning (for instance, on the website it said that a certain phrase meant "Nice to meet you" when in reality it just meant "Great pleasure). I was thinking about gettign Rosetta Stone but I'm not entorely convinced by their marketing hype (it is almost too good) and I don't want to drop a lot of money on something that I won't find useful. So, with that said, have any of you ever used Rosetta Stone? If you have any other language learning suggestions I would be happy to hear them as well.

At first I thought this thread was going to be about people actually trying to translate hieroglyphs into Greek.

I've never used Rosetta Stone before, so I can't say much on it. Personally, if I want to learn a new language, I'll get a tutor or a native speaker that's willing. That way, you can have 'practise conversations' with them and have a 'feel' of the language. I'm not sure what Rosetta Stone does to help with your vocabulary, grammar skills, and conversation skills :/

But that's just my personal preference - I've never learnt a language by myself so don't take my word up for it.

In other words, you no nothing but are happy to share your speculation :D.

Having actually used RS a little (in my on again-off again attempt to learn Russian, as it happens), I can say it does provide a style of learning which you can't find elsewhere (and certainly not for free), but does benefit from having a good dictionary and other supplementation as necessary. Communication with native speakers goes without saying, of course.
