RPG purists...

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 1:10 am

...which I am not one of (I love Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim equally, among others), I am wondering what opinions you might have regarding Drakensang, and also the new River of Time prequel.

I'm also mildly curious as to whether anyone here is going to get the new Gothic 3 Gold Enhanced; I didn't play any of this series until I had played Oblivion into a second year, by which time Gothic 3 wouldn't have had much chance to eclipse it even had it not been so buggy.

Anyway; just wondering these things. I hope this is an appropriate forum for this topic.

Thanks.

Maybe he means people who are well versed in the ways of the RPG and want their opinion on how good of an RPG these game might be.

Never played Darkensang or River of time but I have played Gothic 3 it has a horrible combat system even more so then TES but if you can look beyond that its a good buy. Also Gothic 3 cities actually fee like cities unlike TES games there is not 10 npcs but 30+ and that is guards alone then there is civilians and people of interest as well. It can also look quite nice with some ini tweaks.

My thoughts exactly. Who is to say what would define such a thing and I would imagine even if someone did, someone else would disagree. Most of us can't even agree on exactly what defines an RPG in the first place. :lmao:

I can see it now. RPG purist #1 vs. RPG purist #2. Haha.

...okay then-bear with me, as the term was used only for a very specific purpose; it is that purpose which shaped the vague idea of a definition for 'RPG purists'. Essentially, I merely wanted to get the attention/thoughts of those that churn the minutiae of design/mechanics/gameplay facets around through their personal opinions/cognitions/preferences/predilections/biases when determining their position relative to a specific game. I left out the idea of 'fun' just now, perhaps unfairly, because it often seems that many people have more fun evaluating games than playing them, and I generally find that a games fun value reveals itself to me independantly of intellectual assessments of said game. Having said that, however, I would like to apologize to any who may think that the decision to leave 'fun' out of a definiton of RPG purists characteristics is pejorative-you are probably correct-I meant no offence.

@Salidin

I agree with your basic assessment of Gothic 3; had some really irrtating gameplay and multitudiness glitches. However, the number of years that its community, and developers, have been supporting and patching it, mixed with the enhancements made for the (re)release (as Gothic 3 Gold Enhanced) makes me feel vague tremors of giddiness. Also; tweaking and texture mods did make that game look very nice; I, too, was impressed by city/stronghold design, as well.

Lastly, I can only say that I hope that the Fable 3 comment was not aimed at me; I do not think that my fragile ego could take it.
