RSS Feeds

Post » Mon Jul 15, 2013 7:43 am

Does anyone still use them? I feel like a lot of people think RSS is dead, especially since Google shut down Google Reader. But, I love them! It's like the cheat code to the internet.

If you do, what are you're favorite feeds to follow? I'm trying to expand my feeds to include more interesting content.

P.S. I wish this forum had rss feeds for more than just the Community Discussion subforum...

Yes, I've got 61 feeds in my feed reader right now and that will be increasing in a couple of weeks.

Since Reader went under, I've been using Feedly. I have some gripes about it, but it's the best I've been able to find as a replacement.

As for favorites, it's hard to say. I read everything at once as opposed to breaking them up. I have them organized into categories, though, just to help keep track of them for when I need to update them or whatever. I've got a combination of general science stuff, news, technology, game news, and a little bit of randomness. I think my favorite categories are the randomness and technology sections.

Eh? I don't know anyone who thinks they're dead...

Rather, due to many blogging sites being so heavy on infinite-scrolling AJAX pages, RSS feeds are often the only viable way to read a decent backlog.

RIP Google Reader

I switched to The Old Reader. Seems good so far, though occassionally it marks all posts as read when I click through posts from the 'all items' tab. So I don't do that anymore.

I use it mostly to follow some youtube channels (it's more reliable than youtube's own subscription system), as well as several blogs, usually modding/indie related. It's very nice for those long mod projects that only have news once every few months, that saves me from having to remember to check it myself every now and then.
