Rules for enjoying Skyrim

Post » Sun May 06, 2012 6:39 pm

I like the keeping an in character journal idea. Might keep a blog or something from my character's perspective.

I never fast travel. Usually stop at an inn or camp at night to sleep. Make sure my character eats every few hours, never run my horse farther than from one town to another without a days rest, etc. Just RPing stuff.

But, I realize lots of people don't 'get' playing like this, it isn't for ev erybody. x3

Part of the secret of successfully playing dead is dead is to embrace the concept of "live to fight another day". If you are out-matched, run. I intend to attempt this play style, for as long as possible. They did this in LOTRO, where you'd get a special achievement when getting all the way to lvl 20 without dying. Similar achievements would be awesome in this game. But of course.. there tends to come a point where adhering to this totally kills ur buz, as in your 60+ hour char dies a [censored] type death. I've heard some interesting ways to get around this though, like making yourself spend a week of game time in town to "recover" after a defeat. Dropping/destroying some or all of the gold, loot, equipment you were carrying at death, and keep a backup set of gear in store. If nothing else, these last few options forces you to switch gears after being defeated, and giving yourself some time before attempting whatever feat that killed you again. And though not as severe as dead is dead, still carries with it powerful, somewhat realistic, reason not to die.

Yep! This is how I plan on spending my three day weekend! So stoked...
About the ''dead is dead''. I might be able to make a mod so It will automatically remove the save game. still kind of useless though:S

I would never ruin my experience with the game with a self-imposed 'dead is dead' rule. Storylines are to be played out, not started fifteen times but never concluded because the hero keeps getting eaten by a dragon.

If one wants to make death significant, then I prefer the 'only reload saves made at a safe bed' rule. Using this rule, death still has some sting to it because you can potentially lose hours of play and so should be avoided, but you don't have to scrap an entire game. The events that led to your death can be written off as a ominous prophetic nightmare you had while sleeping.

I like your general rules, Meteor Slime.

Mine are very similar to yours, except for the last one since I do like to experiment and test limits. Also, I try to avoid re-starting a game over and over again only to get sick of the beginning and it becomes a real chore to get through the first "tutorial dungeon" part. My own time is precious as well so I can't afford to be overly hard-core with the whole dead is dead philosophy. I used to do that years ago when I had more time to spare, but not these days.

But I can't stress how much I agree with the "go slow" rule. It always amazes me how some people feel like a game is a race to be won by finishing it first and then crowing over the fact as if it's a good thing. Particularly with role playing games like the Elder Scrolls series, the longer you spend enjoying it the more you get from it. That's also where mods come into their own - mods can add a whole lot more enjoyment (and help remove the annoyances) from a game. For me it's all about getting the most from my money, not racing through and missing a large chunk of the content simply to say you've finished it first.

I don't have any others of my own really. You covered mine pretty well.
