its one of the first things i thought about when i heard about ESO. ive never played an mmorpg and only played Oblivion and Skyrim,so i dont know what is normal.in both games i could run (jog) indefinatly without tiring. i found this to be a big immersion killer, but being a single player game,it was easy to choose to walk and pretend my character would get tired if i ran too long.
when i heard about ESO, the first thing i envisioned was alot of people jogging around like a bunch of super-marathon runners.i think this will look dumb and will probably make me avoid multiplayer adventuring and seek a more single player experience.
i think to be realistic, there should be limits on how far a character can jog or sprint. there should be fatigue.
the way i see it, we need 2 more bars. one for hunger, the other for sleep (not for the main screen, but in a menu)
the hunger bar would be like a fuel guage, indicating your overall energy level. any activity, walking, running, jumping, combat, all would use energy that is indicated by your stamina bar. energy used by the stamina bar is replenished by the hunger bar.
the sleep bar determines how fast the hunger bar can replenish stamina. if your well rested, you can replenish stamina quickly from the hunger bar. energy consumption rate determines how fast the sleep bar falls. if you conserve energy by walking, the sleep bar will fall slowly. high energy usage like running will make the sleep bar fall more rapidly, requiring more frequent sleep periods. if you let both sleep and hunger get low, your stamina bar should be allowed to fall far enough down for your charcter to fall unconsious, even in battle.
with this kind of a routine, someone who plays a tank in heavy armor will be slow, and require alot of food/sleep when making long journy's on foot. people in light armor will be able to run further and use less food and go longer before needing sleep.
this is also not counting any kind of magic/potion enhancements.
of course all this would need to be balanced for gameplay. people dont want to be forced to let their character sleep the whole time they are logged on. you could do things like have everything topped off when you log in so it would be hours before needing any kind of sleep. an example would be 30 minutes of realtime set for your character to sleep after 6-8 hours of play, or whatever balances out.
i dont know what would be the best soultion. im just worried ill log in and see every single player running everywhere. to me, its a deciding factor whether i buy TESO or not.
