There are mixed stories on this. For a long time I used random barrels (one in Winterhold and one by the smithy in Whiterun) but then one of my characters lost a lot of stuff when that barrel reset. People said at first to use dragon corpses, but these do disappear ... sometimes very quickly. I've heard that the first dragon, the one outside Whiterun, doesn't disappear, but I wouldn't rely on it. tbh the bouses are safest, and even with those you can't be 100% certain that no bug will intervene. Carry anything that you'd be really sorry to lose.

I believe, outside areas, the only safe bet is the ground. So if you need to store anything, make sure you are outside, and on the ground, but not 100% sure on that.

I've heard that the only place where your stuff doesn't disappear is when you buy your own house and store it in there. Any other - public place - is subject to resetting and your stuff disappears.

Maybe someone else knows more.

Good luck.

We'll have to wait for the CK to be released for PC before we can say definitively.
There are some free shacks, etc, but not all containers are safe.

When starting out, I like...
Spoiler

The Alchemist's Shack on the path from Riverwood to Ivarstead
It has a bed, alchemy table, garden and three containers.
The end table next to the bed is safe, but the two barrels are not..

...It's a free flop with a safe container. Nice spot until one can afford a town dwelling.

Edit: I use it just long enough until I can get Honeyside in Riften (not required to start the MQ or be a certain level).

I've used Gedur's and Hod's house at Riverwood over 3 characters. The wardrobe and the chest at the far right end do not reset. ^ But I'm also playing safe, only ingredients and spare armor sets go inside those; I always carry my combat, alchemy/smithing gears and potions with me.

Owning houses in Skyrim lacks the wow factor. Solitude's house is particularly disappointing, and I'm worried about more Riften thane glitches associated with buying and decorating property.

Sort of off topic, but how difficult would it e to include a purchasable "lock set" you could buy? When used on one chest, it changes that chest to never reset and requires a key. Such a thing would allow a player to make a home anywhere with a bed and a container.
