Scaling in Skyrim like in Oblivion?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 7:47 am

I have not brought the game yet, but I have heard a lot of good things about it. I've played Oblivion and like it but the one problem I has with it was the scaling of creatures/mobs to your character which I dislike a great deal, the one thing I love about RPGs is the ability to go back to old areas and show just how powerful I became after a lot of time and hard work.

My question is: Do Skyrim have that same scaling system from Oblivion?

naah its not back...not really... maybe in an altered version but it is cleary not the crappy system that Oblivion used. I think only the Dragons scale with the player level. I think some NPC enemies like Bandits just become stronger versions at one time, but its not like they are permanently at my level. In Oblivion you could kill a rat with two hits and then, ten levels later, you still needed two hits because the rat was leveling. Its not like that anymore. When I started a pack of wolves could threaten me, now I shout them away with one HUA!

And especially: Bandits dont tend to use valuable equipment like glass or daedra armor / weapons.

That was a rather confusing response. I think you might have taken 'back' too literally.

Places lock to a certain level when you first discover them - after which point they'll remain there - so yes, you can go back as a level 20 characer to a place you first visited when you were level 5 and you should own the bandits there. However, there's a caveat, and that's that places have a level range attached to them. Dungeon A might have a range of 5-10 and Dungeon B might have 23-30, say. If your level 5 character enters A the dungeon will lock to 5 and B will lock to 23. Returning to these same places as a level 20 character will have these at 5 and 23 (so B would still be above your current character).

The world still revolves around the player. Enemies and loot will level with you.

It's not as extreme as Oblivion, they've added a few hurdles for the scaling to leap, like locking some areas at certain difficulties depending on when you come across them, but ultimately you may still get the same lack of immersion that Oblivion suffered from. That feeling that everything reacts to you, rather than your character entering a world that seems like it lives & breaths without you.

On the plus side there is no longer a straight horizontal difficulty curve anymore, it does rise and fall in places.

Overall the game is more fun than vanilla Oblivion, it's not perfect though. If you have the choice, get the PC version so you can mod it.

Ok that's is really good to heard because I really like a sense of progression in my RPGs and from what you said I like this new system. Looks like I'm getting Skyrim over Batman Arkham City today. Thank you guys for the information.
