My School's LCD Projectors Got Hacked

Post » Sat Apr 06, 2013 1:47 pm

My friends and I were sitting in English class, in-between 'activities' so to speak, when the image appeared. My teacher had just turned on the projector that is mounted above our white board, facing down (we just moved into a new school and all the technology is cutting edge and connected to a network of devices). After the EPSON logo appeared and the screen slowly faded in, it displayed the desktop. But only for a second.
After only a moment a pormographic representation of the beloved animated character Shrek was blasted onto our whiteboard. The classroom erupted into laughter. The picture portrayed an official image of Shrek (likely a promotional picture or still from one of the movies) with a crudely painted on male genitalia aimed towards his face (likely done with the useful microsoft application "Paint"). I wont go into anymore detail or mention what was dripping from Shrek's mouth.
The class, with students laughing and laughing at this ridiculous situation of having such a picture displayed in front of them (and if front of the helpless teacher), was disrupted. My teacher ran to the projector and turned it off. Her mood could be described as annoyed, at this point. She turned to the class and told us that she had heard in the staff room that some of the other teachers had been having trouble with their projectors, what images were displayed on them she wouldn't say (only that the one we saw was not the worst). Apparently, she told us, someone had hacked into the unprotected network which included the projectors and was feeding pictures into them somehow. Most of the projectors in my school are having this problem. Teacher turns it on and at some point during the class it displays a pormographic image of some sort. Needless to say, an event such as this one is memorable to immature students like the ones in my English class. I found it so funny I thought I would share the story with the forum.

-snip-

I find it hard to laugh with the knowledge that your teacher(s) could potentially face disciplinary action for allowing students to see that, regardless of the fact that someone else was responsible. Only takes 1 parent to complain.

This reminds me of the time my Social Sciences teacher tried to show us a tintin cartoon by searching on youtube, and accidentally went into a parody/dubbed version where everyone was swearing.

Probably using Apple-TV. It happened in my school too but that was because there was no passwords on the Apple TV.

LCD projectors on network locations obviously not that secure in a high school, brilliant, no one would ever think someone would possibly do something immature like that in high scool.
