Screw you, Buddy. I'm done.

I always found it weird in MMOs when you are given a quest to save some NPCs, but you only save enough to get the quest done. A quest will say something like find a jailor's key and free (20) children. So, you kill the evil jailor. You find a bunch of cages with children in them. You start to free them. 3/20...7/20....12/20...18/20.....20 done!

Then you see another cage. There are more children in that cage! You go to unlock it. You can't. Quest is done, so screw those little brats.

I just always found that odd. Seems to me, if you have a quest like that, you should be able to keep freeing them if ya want, or all the children get freed when the quest is over.

This would required phasing, but it would have a more real feel to it.

it makes sense, i mean i think we have all done these type of quests where you see someone burning and you save 5 of the 8 there but in an mmo game it would require phasing like you said and to me it sounds like TESO is already going to have too much phasing. also there needs to be more caged children and burning people so more than 1 can do the quest at a time otherwise it just becomes a huge camp fest

Yeah, there should not be 20/20, it should be about freeing all the children

How much phasing can you expect before it's just a single player game?

But I get what you're saying. Elder Scrolls usually hides the "Kill 20 bandits" quests by putting 20 bandits in a dungeon and saying, "kill all of the bandits in dungeon X."

Perhaps they should stop treating the questing like it was a single player game. The biggest problem most MMOs have is that they're designed like single player games, but just have a lot of people playing together at once. It should be no surprise that any time a developer takes measures to fix the problems this introduces (phasing, instances, etc), it makes it a more single-player-like experience. It's a sign that the design is flawed when you're trying to be massively multiplayer and your "fixes" work against that concept.

Without phasing, it's impossible. First player clears out dungeon, what are the thousands of other players supposed to do?

I remember from some of the older podcasts or articles that there will be some intensive phasing in ESO, don't hold me to it, but I really have like 90% assurance that I read/heard somewhere official.

Yes there will be a lot of phasing in the game. A lot of the towns in the game will be heavily phased too. I can do a quest with a friend of mine and if I decide to save the town and he decides to let it burn we both will see different versions of the town.

But people shouldn't worry about the major phasing they are adding into this game. It won't really affect you when you are grouping with friends. The only big things that will be phased out are cities and NPCs you decide to save/kill. So if you want to go out and quest with friends you won't have any problems doing so since the "outer world" (which they like to call it) won't be heavily phased.

As long as there is not some idiot who wants me to collect butterfly wings and not the whole butterfly I am good...though I have always wondered why I can't save the rest of the children too...though in some cases they respawn so fast I might find myself there for a long while saving kids. The reason I say butterfly wings and not the whole butterfly is because if the fool only wants the wings then you get the drop syndrome where some of the butterflies don't seem to have wings for some idiotic reason and you have to actually kill 40 of the flipping things just to get 10 wings.

My thoughts exactly. Quests should be designed with the fact that multiple people would be doing this in mind. Guild Wars 2 did a pretty good job where you sort of helped an area out a bit and they responded with "there's still more work to be done but we're glad you could help us anyway!".

Whats worse is when other people are there freeing prisoners and you get 18/20 and then all of them are freed! They're all free! So why is my quest not complete?

Because you need to stand there twiddling your thumbs and wait for 2 more to respawn to complete it...

I agree that MMORPGs feel like single player games until endgame and thats not a good thing. Personally, I would not mid seeing questing removed altogether but the solution does not need to be that extreme.

Nice thing in GW2 is that some events pop up and you can actually complete them by fully eliminating the enemy or stockpiles that they have or defending stuff, if you dont keep up on it or have enough people you can complete it, its nice because it eliminates the whole idea of throwing 10 buckets of water on 10 of the 12 burning people.

Not the point. They are all saved. If they have been completely saved then why is it not a completion?

What if you was asked to free 20 children for example and only free 18. Where are the 2 thats missing ? You got to find them by looking at a journal off one of the bandits and hunt them down, you get to the location only to find a necromancer has made them into undead servents. You finish the mission, but you also stop a evil necromancer in the process.
