[IdeaBrainstorm] Scrolls!

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 5:52 am

So, I've been watching all of these mod topics pretty closely now for a couple of days, and I've got to say I'm excited for when the CK comes out and these wondrous ideas begin to come to fruition, but until then, I've got another idea to throw onto the mod idea pile.

So, you find scrolls in the world right? and you buy scrolls from vendors right? Now then, I think it would add more utility to the game and a number of classes if you could make your own scrolls!

Think about it, you find rolls of blank paper all over the place in dungeons, you find Ink Wells, and quills too! I feel it is almost an insult that you cannot make your own scrolls :o

I'm not experienced in modding in any way, though I plan to learn what I can when the CK comes out, but I'm pretty sure making a whole new skill would be very difficult, but here's my basic idea.

You should be able to take 1 Roll of Paper, 1 Ink Well, and 1 Quill and basically Seal a spell into a scroll.

The player would be able to seal any spell they have learned, and perhaps it would cost approximately 125% of normal Magicka cost of the spell, but the idea behind it is, if you've got the materials you can now carry something like emergency spells with you.

Say your a warrior, but your alchemy skill blows. You could seal up a couple of "Fast Heals" or an "Iron Flesh" and you could unleash the spells at a moments notice, without the worry of not having enough Magicka to cast them in a row!.

Perhaps some limitations could be brought in then, such as being burnt out from channeling so much foreign Magicka through you (Even if it was once yours) to prevent from just spamming dozens of power scrolls.

This is just an idea I've had for a couple of days now, and I haven't seen anyone else on the forums suggest such a thing, despite all the Magicka revamp mods in discussion. Thanks for your time in reading this idea of mine, and ideas/criticism are welcomed.

I like the idea of scrolls been given more of a purpose but I'm not sure that's the way forward. Potions basically do the same thing (in respect to the running out of magicka emergency) and it's nigh on impossible to run out of them. You should at least be rewarded for making them by having them cost less magicka as opposed to more.

Scrolls normally don't use magicka, because the whole idea of scrolls is to give non magic users magic.

i keep thinking scrolls whenever I see paper in TES games since MW. They would basically be one shot enchantments so could use soul gems as well but with more powerful results.

The one time I've seen scrolls actually make sense was when I had a companion mod in Oblivion that let me alter companion spells in-game by simply handing them scrolls. That way, I could direct them on what magic to cast by simply putting in or taking out spells as they leveled up.

Having the ability to scribe scrolls would make sense in that context.

As it stands, scrolls are good for vendor trash, as they are light and valuable.

Well, the idea was Scrolls to be a "Go into the fight prepared" type of play style, in a Utopian world, this mod would be used in conjunction with a 'hardcoe' mode mod where one can't endlessly chain-chug dozens of potions, Anyway, criticism appreciated :)

Someone said scrolls were supposed to be for someone to use spells without costing Magicka. Well, that's sort of my idea, except you have to have at least enough Magicka to inscribe it on a scroll, so you'd have to be SLIGHTLY inclined to the Magi arts to be such a scribe, but you would not have to be some 550 Magicka, 400% Regen toting spell flinging Ballista of pretty lights.

I think this would be easy to do, depending on how the crafting abilities were implemented. Just have them be recipes at a custom crafting bench. Each scroll requires a filled soul gem, paper, and ink. Petty for novice spells, lesser for apprentice, and so on. You use your skill level in the appropriate school of magic to determine what you can / cannot make.

If you are going to factor soul gems in them IMO more than one scroll should be made. The OPs original intent was to channel your own magic into the creation of the spell, not to use a soul to power it.
