*Note: This is pretty much the whole article at the moment.*

French President Francois Hollande is considering a pushing for a new tax that would see search engines such as Google have to pay each time they use content from French media.

Hollande discussed the topic with Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, during a meeting in Paris on Monday.

Hollande says the rapid expansion of the digital economy means that tax laws need to be updated to reward French media content.
Google has opposed the plan and threatened to bar French websites from its search results if the tax is imposed.

Germany is considering a similar law, and Italian editors have also indicated they would favor such a plan.

Personally, I am willing to side with google in baring/banning all French related material if they do this kind of crap. In my opinion, this is just a shoddy attempt at deriving more money to stuff slowly dwindling coffers. If this were a digital tax for purchased products I wouldn't be too against it, but this is just complete bull.

I'm just going to wait for imposed "taxes" against text services like skype where users are charged 1 penny per word sent in a chat message.

Man are they in for a treat with that. I'd be happy that material from my country was easily accesses and would consider what daily aid it gives to the people of my country reward enough, not to be putting an added tax on it for some easy money grubbing. Or hard in this case as I can't see any sane person backing this up and more likely than not French material will simply be blocked from Google. I for one would support that over the tax.

BWAAA HAAA HAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...

aaah.., that was funny.

right, now to get some seriousness in here.. :stare:

[Don't worry moderators, this isn't going to get political, this is addressed to ALL of them]

*ahem*

Dear various world leading governments,

In regards to the taxation of internet content created by the populous at large that the current French governing administration is possibly proposing.., don't even think of it.

..don't even dream of thinking of it, and even so you should wake up and issue a public apology if you do.

Or your populations will rise up in revolt and pretty much [censored] up everyone's afternoon.

yours truly,
a concerned member of the populous who has his finger on the pulse of that same populous and can tell you, they're getting pissed off.

can anyone send this off to the UN for me

While I can see the reasoning for wanting to update the tax code for the 21 century, I don't see how they can realistically/logically tax a company directly for people using their FREE service.

Tax the advertisemants, sure. Increase taxes on electricity and other utilities used by providers of digital content. That makes sense to me.

But tax a company for a guy being curious what the height of the eiffle tower and providing him a way to access that information? That's [censored].

I they are talking about content owned/copywrited by the Frech Gov'ment, then sure. If they are talking about free material in the public domain.... Good luck.

Not to mention setting themselves up to get hit by the general public who actively contributes to the internet demanding for variable tax breaks that would be dependent on how much is uploaded..

yup.., reeeaally gonna happen

This is, word for word, the exact response I had. :P

Hope France likes being behind its own self-imposed Google firewall!

Makes you stop and think though, when a company becomes more powerful than a nation.

Google should buy France and put a stop to this.
