Senseless and over bearing cursing in films recently..

Post » Thu Oct 24, 2013 3:56 am

Now, don't get me wrong. The occasional f-you etc can be needed and humorous in films and I think everyone knows that. That's fine.

I recently saw a pre screening of the Julia Roberts film "August: Osage County" and I must say, I don't get it. Not that I don't get the film, but the fact that there were over 100 literally, yes, 100 f bombs during the movie and just as many G-damns. I don't get it.

It was so much that it really turned me off from the film, all I could think about and hear was the F bomb or G-d, both of which I'm not a huge fan of anyway but like I said, the occasional f bomb is funny and needed, but this was so over the top that it was revolting. No one talks like that. No one that I know, anwway, I mean this was the most vulgar and offensive film I've ever seen. I was invited along with my family to view the pre screening and I must say..we were all revolted. It was absurd.

There was one scene where Julia Roberts uses the f word about 50 times in the span of 2 minutes. Wut? Why? That is so unnecessary. I don't know ANYONE who wants to listen to that. Ever. It was just..jarring..

Anyway, why do writers in the last couple of years demand the use of more and more vulgarity? Have we forgotten the last century of film making that got along just fine without that obscene and overuse of vulgarity? I mean jeez.

Cussing is an Art, not everyone can pull it off. And, with cussing, less is more.

Sure there can be one character who is foul mouthed because that is what the character is. And some situations and groups lend themselves to more crude language. However, most of the time cussing is just a cheap crutch to cover up bad or uninteresting writing or plot. Kind of like gratuitous six, although I am much more tolerant of that......

Yeah, well, every single character in this film dropped the f-bomb or g-damn literally once a sentence. It was literally mind blowing. I was just taken aback at just HOW MANY times it was said in ONE sentence. It was like every single other word was the f word, and I mean that very literally.

And to be fair, the acting was great. Julia Roberts and Maryl Street were great performers. But the writing..was awful..

I am reminded of that scene in Planes, Trains and Automobiles where Steve Martin's character is dealing with the Rental Car Agent. He uses the F-Bomb many times, to great effect as it is exactly what his character would do in that situation. However, the best part was her one F-Bomb in the final response. Classic. However, I don't remember any other F-Bombs in that movie.

Reminds me of Scarface. But that movie NEEDED the f-bombs.

Only movie that I can't watch too frequently is Scarface, the constant stream of the f word just gets old. Other than that, I don't recall anything that ever bothered me cursing wise.

Edit: Funny Fanner and I should both bring up Scarface at the exact same time.

Quit your [censored] [censored] whining. ;)

Had to Google what this movie was as I've never heard of it.

Pretty much stopped reading that far into the movies' description and closed the window. No thanks.

See I respect that this opinion is your opinion but I adore profanity. Use it everyday, just like pretty much everyone else, and I'm not bothered by it in the slightest. I do agree that it can be done very poorly however.

It can be jarring but it's certainly not a deal breaker for me, certainly not something like [censored] either.

Maybe you finally stopped being a [censored] and manned the [censored] up.

Ok I think we've made our point.

I don't see a [censored] problem with cursing.

At the end of the [censored] day, it's just another [censored] word.

I really don't understand the appeal of rampant cursing (once in a blue moon, I'll toss one off), but....

...people think that's a curse? On par with, say, any of the actual "four letter words"?

Huh.

I thought there was much less of it these days because the studios are so afraid to make anything but PG-13 movies. I mean, Bruce Willis isn't even allowed to say his signature line in the recent Die Hard movies.

It's just one of those weird stigmas in the US that the rest of the world has to put up with. Violence and brutality is a-OK, but nudity and cussing? That's too far, man!

I am ashamed that I had to think about what that line was, because I had forgotten it. :(
