Serana's true nature? (MQ Spoilers)

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:30 am

Even if I don't get to play til the PC version is released, I watched a pretty good Dawnguard-side lets play. So anyone who completed a Vampire-side palythrough, i'd appreciate anything you can add.

This is all speculation, as I doubt there will be anything new from her in future DLC... buuuut...

I'm not buying how sweet she is, though I really like the character. She is a worshipper of Molag Bal (or was) to the point of going through a horrific and degrading ritual to become a pure vampire, and still considers it a gift if you ask her about a cure before finishing the MQ.

She is also somewhere around 4000 many hundreds of years old (edit correction, she might be from the 2nd Era, as for a period then there was no Empire), and never once uses her Vampire Lord form no matter how dire the circustances, and showed that there is more to her power when she is completely unphased by the Snow Elf's big attack that wounded him and flung you to the floor senseless. She never shows you a fraction of her true capablities, just standing back and throwing spells, until she looses her temper a little with the Snow Elf.

She is also really eager to turn you into a Vampire, or see you turned into one. Or at least shows more reluctance over a soul trap spell. I also noted just how much she grows to like the PC, and how protective she gets, to the point of making out to her father that protecting the PC is a big part of her betrayal. And it didn't escape me that Hakon made a remark about her keeping you as a pet, as though it wasn't a suprise or new, and how she didn't really argue.

Frankly, i'm half wondering if isn't just a hell of a chessmaster, and if the PC isn't just her pet in her eyes.

An alternative way to look at it is that she is pretty much you're girlfriend if you stay together to adventure. I can see why people wanted a marriage option, there really are vibes to the back-and-forths between her and the PC, and her comments. I wonder if Bethesda didn't include the option more because she is a vampire, and an ancient one at that, who may not want any part of a marriage before Mara.

Side question: can she die after the MQ? Does she stay essential? Because i'm wonderign if she won't turn up in a future TES game, at least in a history book.

All I know is...I planned on staying true to the Dawnguard then as soon as I talked to her..before I knew what happened I was already a vampire.

Oh and I think she can't die in the story, I'm not sure though..

You can't marry her, but we might as well be a couple.

Like I say, i'm not entirely sure a Vampire would want a ceremony of Mara, or typical Skyrim marriage.

I find a lot of the things she said to the PC and the PC can say already outdoes what you get with most wives/husbands in the game.

She probably believes in the way Molag Bal does things.

Take what you want.

She wants you to take her.

Spoiler
The main quest is essentially the same on both sides, as far as im seeing. My recommendation is go with your alignment.
(good or evil) Youll basically get the same rewards on either side. I automatically clinged right to her as soon as her crypt
first opened, so my holy war hero suddenly became an evil vampire lord. However, when I beat the VPQL I went back and
rejoined dawnguard. It appears as if she is even more clingy to show up at fort dawnguard and risk it all for you.

Thats why I say go with your alignment. Vampire lords use allot of magicka, so my recomendation for VPQL is a necromancer
or dark mage. As far as ive seen an archer assassin is perfect for dawnguard because the crossbow is effected by archery
perks. The dawnguard isnt a "true nord" faction, so whatever skillset you want to use is fine with them, they wont cry if you cast
a spell.

As far as marriage goes. Nope. I thought through the whole questline, "If shes a princess and im a dragonborn/ archmage/
harbinger/ theives-guild-master/ listener/ vampire-lord/ champion-of-each-daedra/ civil-war-hero/ Thane-of-each-city that I
would be a perfect candidate." I thought maybe in the end Harkon might say "okay you got what I needed, here have the
girl and the castle, im going to disappear for some reason."

After all, every dungeon that me and Serana entered together felt like a date, especially enjoying the scenery in the vale
with my one-of-a-kind hot lady. Id bump into her and pretend it was a kiss, yeah, fun fun. But as far as Im concerned, she is
allready my lady. On a positive note, I can have a home base girl, and then one for the road. Dovahkiin deserves two.

She's the intended love interest for the player to help fill the disappointing void that is the marriage system.

But they tripped at the finish line. Somehow, they actually did a good job filling that disappointment, which was a suprise in that of itself for me, but then they don't allow the player to follow through? Or are we just suppose to sulk in the inns, drinking and reminicing about what could have been - not knowing the horror that would have been if we had been able to marry her - thus bringing us full circle back to the shallow marrige system?

...it's like real life. Kinda creepy. Now we shall forever remember our Serena fondly as the one that got away, rather than the one that's in the kitchen who is for some reason saying things very out of character to us. Well played Beth. Well played.

If you ask her to turn you into a vampire after being cured, she's actually really hesitant about it. I'm just in it for the ass though.

She isn't getting away on my main RP character. Unless someone even more fun is introduced in another DLC, Serana is going to be modded into the next TES game as a companion. We can't get married, but hey, this is Nirn. Ingame religious beliefs and laws don't insist that my Nerevarine and Vampire lover get hitched. They are eternal partners either way, though a lot of that is going to be spent trying to find a way to get a nicer Daedra to make a stronger claim on Serana's soul than that of Molag Bal. =P

It's funny how harkon calls you her pet but you actually lead her.

"It's funny how harkon calls you her pet but you actually lead her."

Thats one of the thinsg that made me wonder, see. As neglectful as he is, he would know his daughter much more than we get to, and look at both her parents. The apple never falls far from the tree. Plus they are a family of Molag Bal worshippers.

Its likely she really is as nice as she seems, but i've read too much vampire fiction and dark fantasy to be entirely comfortable with a Vampire quite so neutral good as she is. Especially with a chaotic evil background and family.

Fun thought: Perhaps its because your blood is the first she has tasted in many centuries. That spike that triggers the puzzle to free ehr? That goes through your hand? I suspect that blood went straight to her mouth.

Horrible thought: Imagine if a really cruel Dovahkin started to solve the puzzle, then went and did every other storyline in the game instead of freeing her. Potentially awake in that tiny tomb for months if not years, alone. Nightmare fuel.

It may very well be that Bethesda did think that a traditional Nord wedding was a little too much. Perhaps it is enough to assume you are lovers and move on. Maybe they could have had you exchange some rings or gifts of some kind. The only real marriage benefits you are losing are the daily gold, and extra shop and Lovers Comfort perk (which really isn't a whole lot better than Well Rested anyway).

They could have gone the extra mile and made a special vampire-oriented weddong ceremony. Not that hard.

Yeah. Just change the Mara mumbo jumbo to Molag Bal-related ceremony without the obscene practices, of course. That stuff is reserved for the bedroom.

I wanted to know what Serana says if you rescue her from the crypt if you are already a vampire. All those damn youtube walkthroughs either have regular characters or werewolves. It is so annoying that I had to dislike each and every one of them. Can anynonee explain what Serana says if you are already a vampire?

From what I understand she just says she knows what you are then the normal dialogue happens.

Serana is a corrupter of men, one look at her and you'll forget all about the Dawnguard..then you'll feel fangs in your neck..

It would make sense. Molag Bal is the Prince of Corruption as well, and he seeks to corrupt men into his sway. Serana is a purelblooded vampire created by him. It wouldn't be far-fetched. They are known to be very manipulative.
