Service rifle better after patch?

Post » Sun Oct 05, 2008 8:28 pm

It seems somewhat more accurate now. It used to be barely better than the 9mm pistol, medium to short range spraying, but now I just pulled off some pretty good center of mass hits on ghouls at a respectable distance. Luck, or did it get an upgrade?

I didn't notice any difference but i hope they will make it better with the next patch (make it fire as fast as the marksman carbine and it would be my new primary weapon )

Not using Trigger Discipline no. At least not the in-game version. :D I did add the Forged Receiver component, maybe that changes things even though it doesn't mention. I wish I knew my way around the GECK.

I just spent 30 min or so playin with it. It seems to me that it still svcks eggs. Rate of fire still seems as shockingly slow (even with mod) as before and damage doesn't seem to have increased. It took me 5 shots to kill a big horner for crying out loud.

With fast shot it works a bit better than an unmodified varmint rifle.... that is mainly due to the faster attack speed and larger clip size. An upgraded varmint rifle wins because you can hit stuff from a long distance.

EDIT: I use the Cowboy Repeater instead, which I usually find at the same time as the Service Rifle....since it is basically the same function only 50% more powerful.

Companions like them if speed-modded, and I think they do a little better with them since the patch (don't know if the weapon is different or they are), since aimbots are a lot better at weapon usage then us humans. So if that's all I have at the moment, I give it to them. But my own character doesn't find them terribly useful.

And agree, cowboy repeater much better, and just as easy to acquire at the same point.

Compare how you use Marksman Carbine and your companion.

Stick with Varmint for 5.56mm (and switch to Ratslayer later); if you need higher RoF, That Gun or .357 weapons is nice as well.

Except you can get a Service Rifle at level 1 while the Marksman Carbine requires you to be, what, level 18? The latter is better, certainly, but a large portion of the game you simply cannot have it. (The service rifle is also ridiculously cheap by comparison, which will become a factor when it's time to pay for repairs, unless you're playing the same old tired repair-centric character build)
