settlement thefts

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 1:22 am

so i have a building with all the shops in it. i place a table next to each shop. on the table i place examples of what that shop sells. i have noticed that these items i place on tables become missing. is it possible to stop the disappearances? is it theft? bug? they are not on the ground, i looked. just...... gone.

NPCS will pick up items that are laying around, also some items won't persist once you move away from the area enough that the cell 'unloads'

Settlers will occasionally pick stuff up but its usually only when they are under attack.

I've had problems with items teleporting through tables and desks since day one. Sometimes they would be on the ground, sometimes they would be IN the ground. Id actually have fast travel to try and make it move back to the surface, or at least part of the item so I could grab it.

My intentions were the same as yours too, making the shop actually look like one. Or making an office desk in one of the homes.

Hopefully its something they can stabilize with a patch.

thanx hoss. i also have a nuka cola machine, with a table next to it, and a bottle of each cola on the table. so far, THEY have not disappeared. ah oh, epiphany...... i think the items that are going missing are items that can be broken down for junk. ex. is i have been losing the box of abraxo, but the stimpak stays. i have a typerwriter on a desk, it keeps disappearing, but the eye glasses i leave there never do. possible?

I think the only account of "theft" I can recall is one of my farmers at the castle somehow ending up with a flamethrower - funny thing is it wasn't even an item in my chests. Must have been one of the pre-placed weapons to help you do the quest to unlock it.

I think the reason theft for me is so low is that I give them better weapons than their default pipe guns. That, or that I never store any ammo because it's weightless anyways, so they can only use what I give them.

Also as far as I can tell, I never seen a case of armor or apperal being stolen.

Some of the items could also have fallen off the table and have gotten "kicked around" so they can be anywhere in the settlement.

One time I placed 3 vases on a table in Sanctuary. At one point I checked on them and they were all on the ground. I placed them back on the table, but eventually they would be on the ground again. I left the vases on the ground. After a while they "disappeared", but I did not bother to look for them. Later on in the games I would find the vases in different locations far away from where the table is where I originally put them on.

In another situation I placed a gas mask and radiation suit on top of a drawer that I created in in Starlight Drive-in. I left the settlement and went back later. Both items were gone. I checked the inventories of all the settlers and no one had. I didn't bother to look for them so I continued playing.... 15 levels later I decided I wanted to create an armor workbench. I decided to move the drawer to make a little bit of space and.... I found the gas mask and radiation suit under the drawer.

Maybe. I really have no idea.

I put a straw pillow and a teddy bear on a bed pretty early on. The pillow would glitch into the bed or disappear constantly, the teddy bear has remained in the same spot untouched.

Cigars, cigarettes, and lighters would fall through all the time but the ash trays would stay.

Do what I do, and put your stuff on an elevated structure that can only be reached by jumping from an adjacent roof (https://www.dropbox.com/s/1b67lh7wd5hkv1m/2016-01-14_00001.jpg?raw=1). NPCs can't jump = no theft. Yes, settlers can steal from containers too if they can get to them. The only safe container is the one shared by the workbench and all the crafting stations.

For me it appears that anything I just "drop" into place from my inventory will stay in place as long as I don't touch it. If I pick it up and manipulate it (especially using the workshop interface) it will drop through any table/floor etc...

A real shame, since using the workshop interface is MUCH easier than trying to pick it up manually.

Beth has been having issues with item placement/decoration in every game of theirs I've played.

I just don't understand why it is so hard to fix, or why they can't at least give items a semi-realistic weight/rotation when you "pick them up" manually. Why do nuka-colas always have to drift upside down or sideways when I pick them up? They clearly have a light end and a heavy end, just make them "droop" heavy end down....PLEASE!!!!

That said, anyone been able to place nuka colas in a nuka cola machine standing up correctly? It is impossible using the "pick up" mechanic, and even using the workshop interface they are not allowed to be put in there due to clipping or something!! smh...SMH!

And yes, I do know about OCDecorator mod, I will use it, I just usually wait to install mods until Beth patches a few times and the GECK is out, so it doesn't mess up any of my games.

I'm sorry.

It's the settlers in my Sanctuary.

They are stealing your stuff.

I had the main house in Sanctuary stripped completely clean...all the rooms were empty.

Now a month or so later, all kind of furniture has appeared in the rooms of that house.

I did not put it there. Seems they have gone out and found what they wanted and brought it home.
