Sharing KB&M across platforms issues,suggestions

Post » Tue Jun 18, 2013 10:02 pm

I want to set my Desktop as the server and have my Laptop as a client for sharing the KB and Mouse of the Desktop.

I looked into the program http://synergy-foss.org/. However, even though I have followed the instructions to the letter, as far as i can tell, and have exhausted every outlet to get this to work. I have epically failed.

Nonetheless, it is well within the realm of possibility that I am just a total moron and I'm blatantly ignoring a step, procedure or just failing to understand WTF is going on to start with.

Is there a better solution and or program to accomplish this with?

what problems have you encountered?

What OSes are you using?

Have you tried disabling your firewall and/or UAC momentarily?

Hmmm.. good questions. Both the Desktop and the Laptop use W-7 OS. The Desktop is 64 and the Laptop is 32. I downloaded the associated file for each.

I can setup the Server and see my Desktop's IP address, and create the Client in the interactive window. I then install the 32bit version on the Laptop and go through the client process. when I get to the client windows ( bottom half ) as shown on page 10 of the manual, it doesn't show up the same. It states the need for the server name, but it actually shows the client name ( unable to change ) and has a blank to fill out for the server IP.

I enter the server IP, as it was displayed in the installation window of the Desktop setup., but it just repeats an error of unable to connect.

I have since uninstalled from both platforms and seeked advice here from people that may have had experience with this particular software or have suggestions for another. I can try a new download an install if this is the favored program.

EDIT : I'm going to try again later this afternoon or this evening. I happened to think and this may be real stupid... Do I have to have a hardwired link via USB, Ethernet or something between the Desktop and the Laptop?

I am running on the assumption that it is being handled via the Wireless HomeNetwork through my router. Both my Desktop and my Laptop are wireless as the router is on the other end of the house.

You should need a KVM Switch (to connect one Keyboard/Mouse to multiple machines. Unless this software intercepts all key strokes and mouse moves then sends them over a network connection to a connected PC (highly doubtful)

This is what you probably need

It's possible your IP has changed since doing the installation if you didn't assign a static IP to the desktop.

It does, once focus has been given over to the client. The main complaint the program has is that it sends every keystroke over the network in plaintext, so it should only be used over trusted and secure networks.

It should work fine over the wireless network.

My HomeNetwork is set up with both talking to each other and being able to transfer files and even view folders of the other.

The Synergy Homepage states that you only need a network and no extra cables are required. Is that not the same thing?

Great. I will reinstall this evening, look into it again and double check the IPs.

Thanks alot guys. It is greatly appreciated.
