Shields go on the BACK!

Post » Fri Jan 25, 2013 9:42 am

Does anyone else hope this is the only feature NOT similar to the single player games?
It drove me nuts having the shield on my arm all the time without mods..

Hmm... I think they've already shown shields on backs so yes, that's in.

Never really got it in skyrim why it was there...

I mean, even the lightest shields are somewhat of a nuisance to wear when you simply want to move around town talking to people....

well, accurately there are many forms of wearing shields out of combat situation, mostly in hands, on side and sometimes back ( althou rarely because armours rarely posses "scabbards" for shields ) - I guess it would be nice to see a difference between armour types/shield types and the way they are attached

Not if they're bucklers! *trollface* Mental note: I hope this game has bucklers.

Actually, I hope there are lots of new features that are not in the SP games, not just shields on the back.

I liked it, made sense, if you were gonna get robbed by an armed thug it's there for quick access atleast.

I hope we'll have the option of keeping them in our hands though, with our weapon sheathed. It does look cool.

Actually this isn't true. The shield being on your back makes it very hard to access because normally the shield would be tied to the back for travel.

This is just another case of misinformation perpetrated by gaming. Unless you had some magical magnetic force that can be switched on and off holding the shield to your back, it would be very difficult to quickly grab a shield on your back. In fact, the same thing is true for big swords on your back. You cannot draw them quickly, your arms are just not long enough to draw the thing out of the scabbard easily. You would have to kind of unsheath it bit by bit.

Shields and scabbards on backs were just a travel convenience. They have no value for quick situations. Oftentimes they had to be tied to the back to prevent excess movement while the owner themselves were moving. This allowed the user to move more efficiently without the constant weight shifting of loose weapons, shields and armor causing excess exertion. A shield is very hard to secure on your back without tying it down. Almost impossible with conventional means.

Shields usually had straps that you basically buckled/tied/attached to your arm prior to battle. Much like you cannot equip armor and such on the fly.

Of course, this is a game. But Zelda style combat readiness with a shield and sword on your back is a myth. Just an FYI.

It ISN'T easier to access a shield on your back.
