Should I buy Skyrim for myself?

Post » Mon Oct 15, 2012 8:54 pm

I bought Dishonored for myself the other day and I spend a lot of time in it because it's just an awesome experience.
But then I came across Skyrim, saw some videos.
So I'm a little curious about this game.

Maybe some of you could describe how the game is today without giving any spoilers in case I would want to buy this game for myself?
I'll say this much, I like the supernatural and do love a world with choices and great characters.

Open-world gameplay, craftable armor/weapons, potions, and enchanting.

Level-ups depend on skill use, not amount of enemies killed (though that can help with levelling up weapon skills.)

Fight dragons, giants. Take part in a civil war. Save the world. Shout your enemies to death (yes, really.)

Somewhat buggy. Avoid the PS3 version, to be safe. 360 Ok, PC best (as you can download player-made mods/fixes to the game.) Also can download the (watered-down) editor the devs used to make Skyrim if you're on PC and make your own mods.

Some guild questlines are worse than others. "New" features (to the series) poorly implemented (Marrage, dual-weilding.) Development is more to the casual gamer than hardcoe TES fans... which is ok, though some of us fans wished they weren't so keen on dumbing down a lot of features/equipment slots.

considering this is the skyrim forum you will have biased opinions ha i myself bought the game on release night and have played it almost every night since. skyrim is chock full of flaws and setbacks but if you can look past them there's an amazing game to be had. Nothing i've played gives you the kind of freedom that skyrim does (except older TES games) and the style suits me nicely with the norse vibe and harsh fantasy world. You can create who you want, play how you want, and do everything at your own pace all in a beautiful land full of little things that i'm still discovering almost a year later.

Definitely buy

Open-world gameplay, craft able armor/weapons, potions, and enchanting.

Level-ups depend on skill use, not amount of enemies killed (though that can help with leveling up weapon skills.)

Fight dragons(Which gets boring and repetitive.), giants. Take part in a civil war.(It doesn't matter which side you choose. Next to nothing changes.). Save the world(Nothing changes.). Shout your enemies to death. (yes, really.)

Somewhat buggy. Avoid the PS3 version, to be safe. 360 Ok, PC best (as you can download player-made mods/fixes to the game.) Also can download the (watered-down) editor the devs used to make Skyrim if you're on PC and make your own mods.

I've had Skyrim since release and I still have full-blown "wow" moments. I have played through 4 times with 4 different characters and I am not even close to finished. Skyrim is the place to be man, buy it!

The vanilla game is definitely worth it.
With the dlc you really have to think through if you deem them worth buying -- they're expensive and you must weigh what you are willing to pay contra what you're getting.

Elder Scrolls Skyrim in a nutshell:

- Very strong backstory and lore, believable world - past events realised in opinions and views of NPCs. weak characters in main quest but the guild quests of the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild have excellent characters which you'll grow attached to.
- Free roaming, there's always something to do. When you can't think of a quest to do, just pick a direction and walk, you'll find something interesting
- Organic levelling, skills level up based on use, then you get skill points which you can put into a perk. In my opinion a lot better than attributes but the hardcoe RPG plahers disagree for some reason
-DRAGONS!
- Excellent replay value and if you're into roleplaying it's practically manna
- DLC storyline is engaging and interesting (some great Lore moments) some people say it isn't worth it but they've obviously smoked some bad weed.
