So, 1.7? Should I get it or not?!

Post » Thu Aug 23, 2012 2:05 pm

I've read a lot of posts, stating that the infamous 1.7 Update should not be downloaded to the PS3!! That it makes the game worse and such!
But I've also read posts stating that the patch is actually ok, and with Mounted Combat in the mix, it deserves a download!?

I'm european, so I'm on 1.5.. My game is sort of stable and playable, but I definitely don't want to make it run at a worse pace than it already does..! Then again, if it becomes more stable in terms of Stability and Framerate-performance after 1.7, I'm gonna' pick it up!

Any advice people?!?

I haven't updated since 1.4, and I don't think I will be any time soon. It sounds like 1.7 runs great for a bit, and then it all falls apart.

1.05 here (US), and I will not be downloading 1.06 with all the negativity surrounding it. None of the bugs, breaks and barriers that I am experiencing (broken quests, people lying dead in palaces for months, no work from Stewards or rumours from Innkeepers due to side quests that can not be completed etc. etc.) have been addressed.

So, why would I download a "patch" that makes the game run worse? Just for mounted combat?

I think not.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: I was 250 hours into a character on 1.5 with 2 hard freezes and little to no lag during that whole time once I fixed the water freeze issue.

Got 1.6/7, and experienced 2 freezes in the 1st hour, a big drop in draw distance (waterfalls in the distance looked like smudged crayon on the screen), and tons of lag (sometimes when fighting multiple enemies and shouting, sometimes just running outside).

It fixed the issues with enemies respawning, but the lag was so bad I started a new character as people have suggested. I also lost several unique items in Vlindrel Hall shortly after updating, but I don't know if that was due to 1.6/7 or just bugginess with the house.

I'm about 25-30 hours in, level 24, 5 MB save file. I've had
  • 5 hard freezes
  • 2 infinite load screens
  • severe lag after less than an hour of playing
  • unresponsive buttons (shouts and spells mostly)
  • NPCs that jump around almost like they're teleporting
  • gravity issues with picking up, moving, and placing items (most things turn so they're upside down)
  • objects around towns continually falling on the ground (the back porch of Jorrvaskr looks like all the plates and food phased through the tables; all the outside vendors in Whiterun have items on the ground, a lot of interiors are a total mess)
  • tons of pop in textures
There's no way I would update it again. Other than the respawn issue, everything that was broken before is still broken, and the playability is markedly worse.

Edit: I should comment on horse combat. It's awkward; the camera rarely keeps the enemies on screen for me; you still have to dismount if you want to loot the bodies; and you can't cast spells.

As we suspect the 1.07 submitted to SCEE failed and MUST be reworked by Bethesda, there is a small chance that what we get may actually be more stable when it eventually arrives.

So for now I couldn't call yes or no to download, keep an eye out on here once it launches as some will be testing it and reporting back.

It would be amusing if the rework resulted in a more stable patch than on XBox because I'd bet good money v a pile of poo that MS would apply pressure to improve the XBox version of the patch.

Since you don't have the patch and likely won't get it any time soon, there is no advice to give.

What is so hysterically funny is I bet Kivan and Arthmoor could if given the "ok" ( never happen ) make a patch in a few weeks that would bury Beth's lame attempts in the mud and fix things for everyone, but it will never happen, for all the reasons Murt stated weeks ago. The USKP for the PC version already does that, not withstanding all the future versions, that they'll have to put out to rectify Beth's future ( and current ) "title update" failures. I'll keep my fingers crossed, that Beth is "actually" re-doing something to make it more stable as you say Prowler, but given the "history" of Bethesda, I'm not going to be holding my breath...

Are you implying that Sony isn't implying enough pressure on Bethesda?
