should more games have cross-platform multiplayer?

Several years ago, I used to play Final Fantasy XI (thats the MMO one) and while gameplay was lackluster, it had one amazing feature..

no matter what platform you were playing on, you were also playing on the same servers with users from other Platforms (so if i was playing it on my PC, I was still playing with the people who were on the Xbox360 and PS2)..

I thought this was an amazing feature, and I really wish more games would do cross-platform multiplayer

whats your opinion on the subject?

Some genres it could work while others not so much. Back in the Dreamcast days two online games I used to play a good bit were dominated by the PC players. Those were Quake 3 Arena & Evo 4X4. The FPS is self explanatory; mouse & keyboard controls will always beat a controller. The off-road racing game I think it was more hardware limitation. MMO's would probably favor PC players due to keybinds and hardware but it could definitely be doable.

Would depend on the game. It wouldn't be possible with something like Mass Effect 3 multiplayer because of the FPS difference between platforms. But if it worked with a game like the one mentioned in the OP, I don't see why not.

As I recall, Portal 2 co-op is PC/Mac/PS3 cross-platform. (not Xbox due to Microsoft online rules, apparently.)

But, yeah - it would really depend on the particular games (whether they're distinctly better with keyboard, or mouse, or controller, etc; and whether they're competitive or co-op).

I could see it working for co-op gaming of any kind but not for any competitive FPS.

EDIT: Ultimately, yes I think it wouldn't hurt gaming as long as it follows my above statement.

Well it would make Call of Duty games seem like a battle of consoles---finally a true war in a video games. Sony players against Microsoft and maybe Nintendo players in large mutiplayer team deathmatches.

As long as PC players are not integrated, I have no problem with it. THen again. it could be a disaster for people trying to play legit while it would also be a Hacker's dream come true.
