Should Paarthurnax pay for past sins or be allowed to live i

Post » Sat Dec 08, 2012 7:51 am

A debate/discussion about this was brewing in another thread so I figured I would start a thread about it instead of further derail that one. I'll be offering my opinion from my nords perspective as it makes no difference to me the player.

My nord, a true son of skyrim and wandering warrior has taken up his skyforge steel battleaxe determined to drive all the dragons from his homeland. He has slain all named dragons as well as their puppets and partners in crime the dragon priests, to honor the countless nords who were killed and enslaved by these tyrants in the past. The last to go was Paarthurnax who has been hiding from his shame upon the throat of the world, claiming he has overcome his nature and won't ever give in to what he was or is by nature. Paarthurnax aka "Ambition Overlord Cruelty" thought he could escape justice by renouncing his wicked ways and hiding at the top of a mountain that no normal man can climb. Well my nord found him and honored his ancestors by using steel forged in the heart of his homeland to finally put an end to this old foe. He was a wise old Dov, knowing that his time was long overdue so my nord gave him a sporting chance unlike the countless other beasts that he's encountered by not using the shout of old that forces dragons to their knees. He walked up to Paarthurnax, punched him in the face so he knew he wasn't here for long winded chats and then preceded to give Paarthurnax a glorious death upon the throat of the world...this was the only dragon that my nord gave respect and honor to but that still didn't save him from the justice he deserved at the edge of his skyforge steel battleaxe.

So what's your take on the Paarthurnax situation and your opinion of my nord doing what he feels must be done?

EDIT: I'd like to note that I didn't do it at the request of delphine, I can't stand that rude b!$#h and would never work with her or the blades even though max von sydow is the man...if I could I would honor Paarthurnax by burying her next to him

He deserves death.

I don't have to read your comment because I know his story. And I know the answer. The answer is peace, 100%.

Justice is a matter of perspective...does no one deserve a second chance ?

I think he has proven that he has made real change...for the better...

Somehow I get the feeling the very last DLC will somehow play on Paarth. I have an issue killing him, Idk why though. It probably has to do with my issue with killing off Unique NPC's and having one less unique individual in the world, but I could be wrong there.

my thoughts exactly, my nord isn't a saint and doesn't believe in "repent and thou shall be saved" or any of those philosophies...he's a warrior and delivers a warriors justice at the edge of his axe. Saying "I'm sorry and never will do it again" doesn't honor the countless ancestors who were forced to worship him and his kind or pay with their blood....blood must be paid with blood.

No.
He has too long escaped death all in the name of "peace."
All the while the souls of the tormented dead continue to anguish in the name of his actions.

Alduin would currently be trololol'ing on Tamriel if it wasn't for Parthy and his knowledge.

The blades sure as **** did nothing.

I've let him live every time, just don't see the need to kill him. He killed a lot of people in the past, I'm a werewolf, I kill a lot of random people. On most days if someone was to ask I would give them the armor off my back or what ever I can to help them. Some times you just feel like putting an arrow through the head of that farmer walking down the road. Paarthurnax has done nothing but be helpful to me. If the blades want him dead they know where to find him. Lastly, I like the idea that I have three dragons squarely on my side, Odahviing, Paarthurnax, and I think that will be the case with Durnehviir but I have not started Dawnguard yet maybe tonight.

Actually it was 3 nords and the power of an elder scroll that pushed Alduin out of tamriel for awhile...to my knowledge Paarthurnax did nothing to try and stop the tyranny of his brother, he turned his back on his brother and all of skyrim only to help himself find peace thanks to the nord Jurgen Windcaller. I say if he truly wanted to atone for past sins he should've risked his life to stop his brother

So how would Dragonborn know of what happened if it wasn't for Parthy's knowledge of the event? He wouldn't. Thus Alduin would be trololol'ing on Tamriel while the Dragonborn would have a thumb up himself going "WHY I NO STOP ALDUIN!"

seeing how his actions of "saving" us which I have yet to see anywhere where he saved us from extinction, all of his actions that benefited us was not done with the intention of the benfits towards us. He did not actively go out of his way to rebell against alduin because of us mortals, no he started a rebellion to oust alduin necause the dragons didnt believe he shoulda lorded over DRAGONs and that he wasnt doing the job he was designed for. He helps the dragonborn necause he knows Alduin is not dead but will come back so his rebellion against alduin isnt over. We are the only ones that can use the weapon to harm alduin so of course hes gonna be nice to us because of that.
Theres a reason his "friends" right after the war turned around and started slaying dragons because up til the point hpaar went up to the mountain, paar still viewed mortals as beings for him to lord over. He goes with the way of the voice outta either outta survival, pity, or because it strengthens him which was considered impossible since dragons are all born wiyh their power intact and it never goes up or down.
Never once does Paar ever say he was sorry for the crimes or that he is remorseful, he merely states that he was doing what a dovah does, nothing more.

When u look at everything from outside, paar is never remorseful nor had the intended benefits results towards us. We basically unintentionally benefitted from his war against alduin.

Basically, Paarthurnax -and a few others- started questioning Alduin's view about himself and the orders they were tasked to carry out, during the Dragon War. You see,

Being worshiped like a god, because you are what you are, is one thing. Slaughtering the "unfaithful", because the Dragon Priests you assigned to rule the population went nuts, is another.

If someone should execute Paarthurnax, that would be Alduin, for helping the Nords and giving them something more than a fighting chance against him.

So, peace.

I truly believe that it is the character you are playing as choice.

Personally, I have both killed and spared Paarthurnax. I believe he deserves a second chance, but he should have done more to stop Alduin.

1. He had no choice under Alduin's lordship.
2. He was one of the main blocks that ended this reign
3. He tought the voice and still does it to this day - so killing him is like destroying a library with long forgotten tomes of ancient forgotten knowledge. Like the damn mongols....and romans did.
4. The blades reasoning has a flaw. When you did not kill Alduin they say that "We can't allow him to go back to his master" and it's valid enough that someone can concider this as a "What if.." argument. But after you kill Alduin they say "He must die because...erhm....Becasue we say so!" Their reasoning suddenly shifts. It sounds more like a test if the dragonborn can be manipulated and cut off the greybeards.

Also you can say that:
1. If a man killed hundreds of other men , and than repent for his sins. Does this cancel his past deeds? Ofcourse not. As a historic example there is a case of Hans Frank.
2. There is a possiblity of him going back to his evil nature.
3. The Greybeards want to preserve his knowledge and never cared about many lives lost indirectly because of their neutrallity.
4. The whole rebellion was crafted because some dragons didn't want Alduin to rule but to fulfill his destiny as world-eater.

true that's why I said I'm speaking from the perspective of my nord. I have other characters who've spared him because it doesn't matter to them, especially my altmer wizard who's not fond of nords in the first place.

1. there's always choice, he basked in the worship of the people for far too long before turning his back on his brother and his dragon nature.
2. that's debatable
3. he taught the voice to nords and a nord taught him the "Way of the Voice"...seems to me like an even trade and debt paid.
4. I don't work for nor agree with the blades and their ways, I made a note of that in the bottom of my OP

what has he done to pay the debt of blood for the countless nords of old? I still believe sangre por sangre or blood for blood. If he wanted to atone then he should've risked his life to try and stop his brother, not cower at the throat of the world and watch the world burn

NOT TRUE. I'm all for helping a guy who is trying to right some wrongs, but this guy did more then some simple wrongs.

It doesn't matter in the end, like all other choices we may make. That's also not taking into account the fact that we are never told exactly what he did by the Blades, as such we are unable to form a respectable opinion either way.

I've never played a character that thought killing him was a good idea. This is primarily because most of my characters have a pretty dark past themselves, and most have had to seek redemption in one way or another. My current Argonian mage is responsible for murdering thousands of Dunmer during the Red Year, and he comes to terms with that dark aspect of himself every day.

I think Paarthurnax said it best: Who is the better man? He who is good by nature, or he who has to strive for goodness each and every day? Unless your character's a saint, you'd have to be a hypocrite to slay this noble creature.

1. Paarthurnax helped the Nord heroes save the world in the past.
2. He also helped me save the world now.
3. I didn't absorb Alduin's soul, so he might return. And if he does, the next Dragonborn will need Paarthy's help.
4. Yes, Paarthy did wrong. But, if atonement is possible, Paarthy has done it.
5. Regardless of which character I am playing, I am an honorable person. I don't turn on my allies.
