That said, it's not really required or anything. There are a few connections, but overall they are separate games.

You don't need to, but Arkham Asylum will help to setup Arkham City, and will provide backstory and motive for one of the major characters. There are also all kinds of references to AA's events throughout AC.

Plus, AA is a great game, and should be played anyway.
