Should Serana have been around Dawnguard side at all?

Post » Tue Nov 20, 2012 6:44 pm

Had the thought last night with all the love/hate going on about Serana, that maybe she should have been confined to the Vampire side only.

Would it have been better if the Dawnguard side had a specific NPC with just as much character as Serena?

I didn't play the Dawnguard side and I'm not likely to for sometime, probably start a new character for it but much later. So those of you who have played the Dawnguard side and especially those who have played both what are your thoughts, could the DLC story have played out okay if it was not so centered around Serana?

It was pretty lazy on Bethesdas part to make the majority of the quest lines the same for both sides. Whether you choose Dawnguard of Volkihar, you're still forced to go with Serana against Harkon which is what I dislike.

Having played both sides. I'll say Serana made more sense on the Dawnguard side anyways. On the vampire side, she felt more added on. You'd think 'I'm working with Harkon' then suddenly you get his daugther working against him. Its not clearly done. But, Serana seeking the Dawnguard, us, to help stop her father felt more right. Cause you were already working against Harkon.

I don't know if that made sense. Pretty much, I wanted to help Harkon not get railroaded to not helping him. When I was going Dawnguard, it felt more right.

I agree with above poster. It made more sense for Serana to go get help from the Dawnguard...

Also, I don't think they were lazy, so to say, but they wanted to make sure that either way will work for future TES games.. I mean seriously, what will happen in TES 6 if Lord Harkon got what he wished for?

Really? I think serana felt right on the vampire side from what I have seen on youtube. Yes I have watched both sides honestly if you are on the dawnguard side and your character is a follower of meridia she would expect you to take her head right then and there. I know many people have dawnbreaker don't deny it!

Plus any vampire with a brain on their shoulders would know that blocking out the sun permanently is a dumb idea.

Well, from playing, it felt more right on the Dawnguard side for me.

The main issue on the vampire side, you never got a choice. Okay, sun blocking would be bad for future games.

Then the issue becomes, it wasn't done well or clearly. On minute I'm doing what Harkon said, then his daughter suddenly wants to go behind his back and Im alright with it. There was no real time in which it was discussed if it was a bad or good dea 'hey you should help me stop him'. It was suddenly just snapped from working with him to working against him. It wasnt written well.

Hey if I remember right, I told that chick Ill take the Dawnbreaker but I aint her champion.

I actually thought part way through the quest (on the vampire side) that a way to protect her from her father would have been to send her to the Dawngaurd, but then I thought no they would just kill her which would have taken out the threat to the sun and then gone after Harkon later.

Did I miss something here?? Didn't the idea of working for Dad change when it became apparent that he would slice her open and squeeze her like a lemon over the bow, or did I get that wrong?

Thats the idea harkon was going to take his daughter cut her open and bleed her dry over the bow and elven arrows. Plus the PC is getting too strong so he wants to take care of you as well its how the vampire court works. I think the other vampires cannot transform into VL since they say "That does not impress anyone here" I get the jealous kind of vibe when you are flying around the vampire court in VL form.

Plus the dude who sends you on the quests to turn people into vampires says you are special since you have harkon's blood inside you.

The Player Character, I was talking about. I clearly know why she would want to not work with him.

And, you don't really learn that until after you have been rail-roaded. You get her suddenly getting you to do a quest behind his back first, then during the quest you start learning why. Honestly, at first, I was like 'why the game isnt really explaining itself right now' then down the road 'oh, okay I get.' Would have been nice for that to be discussed before so I knew why my character was suddenly doing this.

I get the why and it made sense after the fact. But, at the moment it changed, there was nothing telling the character why.

I think his plan was to corrupt the bow itself via a ritual which reqs Serana's life instead of just arrows... Corrupting the arrows seem to only have a temp-effect.

To correct you.. If you talk to Serana, you learn that she always had a thing against her father and will seem to gladly work against him. It isn't until you meet her mother is when both of you learn Harkon's true plans and desires.

Thanks jusey.

And, yea you can see it coming. Even with all that, which I still think was not written clearly at first, imo I think it still makes more sense on the dawnguard side. It makes sense, after you learn everything, on the vampire side, but it make more sense (to me) on the dawnguard side.

Sneaking into the castle....made more cool sense as a dawguard, as a vampire, you were just getting to another closed off part of the castle you already can move freely in. Her seeking help, made sense with the dawnguard. Becoming friends with a vampire, slowly trusting each other. Was cooler. Getting soul trapped, played out well. And in the end you can cure you.

Felt like a good story arc to me there.

Just what I think though.

I agree. I think they didn't even had plans to allow you to join the Volkihar at first, actually.. The vampire side did seem to be more 'rushed' and made less sense than the Dawnguard side.

As I come from the Fo series I blame it on Skyrims lack of choice.

For example;

After obtaining a certain item you have three speech "choices" with serana that literally all end up with the same outcome.

"No, no! We've got to kill him!"
