V.A.T.S. Should be slow-motion not paused.

Post » Wed Mar 16, 2011 8:20 pm

Don't you think there should be an option for V.A.T.S. just to drastically slow down the game but not pause it completely? I always thought of V.A.T.S. as an assisted aiming system that speeds up the body's nervous system to allow you to more easily aim against an opponent. I think V.A.T.S. would be more realistic and more fun if all it did was significantly slow down the game. What do you think?

It is not Max Payn's bullet time :)

Would super slow mo work, sure I could live with that.... but in all honesty when I am in VATS it is for only a split second and it would not add anything to be slowed down instead of paused. It would only add a 'neat' factor for me.

Something fun for the modders, but not something core games designers should spend their time on.

I'm not following...?

Max Payne was one of the first if not the first mainstream game to use bullet-time AKA slow-motion.
Fallout is not a Max Payne clone and should not become one either.

Well, you said it would be an OPTION, so if the devs actually did anything like this I wouldn't mind. But frankly, it's an option I wouldn't use. VATS pausing time for you to queue up your actions, and then executing them in slow-mo is just fine.

If that was implemented the way VATs works now (highlighting body parts) it would not be good. If any of you have played Red Dead Redemption then you will know it does something similar to what the TC is asking by slowing down time to pick your targets. RDR did a very good job with its implementation, but it is much different from VATs. The problem is that with VATs you focus on one person and their being highlighted with stats, this would be strange if the time was still passing (IMO).

VATS. Not VATs.
(Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System)

[edit]
Well, actually it's V.A.T.S but it's too annoying to type.

No. Slow-mo is horribly boring FPS gimmick - and (imo) this series doesn't need anymore FPS stuff, but less.

Nope.
Never played it.
But I know it's not what Fallout needs.
Played several other games where bullet time has been implemented.
Like WET, which was published by Bethesda.

VATS is fine as is...

Already feels like slow mo...especially in Melee combat.

It's not like the enemy is just going to stand there after you exit VATS anyway....they keep shooting and/or hitting you.

A bit closed-minded, are we? This COULD work, but I think the main reason why bethesda made V.A.T.S. a stand-still kind of mode, is because they didn't want to go through the trouble of programming something that can highlight moving parts. Also, for those of you who say it shouldn't be slow motion, he just means the selection, it's already slow motion when you use V.A.T.S.

VATS was explained pretty well in the first Fallout, and I mean the FIRST one. I see no reason that it should be changed. You know you don't have to use it, right?

Personally, I think it is one the coolest features in the Fallout series.

(Personally, I've always considered VATS as having more to do with Bullet Time than anything else - it's certainly nothing resembling turn-based, after all...)

But no, I like having the game pause for me. That's actually why I make so much use of it in the first place. I like my action games with the ability to kind of step back and think about what I'm doing every once in a while.

If anything, VATS should move further away from Slow-mo toward actual turn based combat.

This isn't read dead redemption, V.A.T.S was a throwback to fallout 1 and 2 one of the things that makes fallout fallout, it should not change.

Lol... I just suggest various ideas to pass the time until I finally get my copy of Fallout New Vegas. I don't even necessarily agree with what I suggested. It was just an idea. There's no need to get so passionately worked up about things.
