Shout won't unlock

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 11:15 am

EDIT: Soul has now been used by remapping key back. My bug report is below this. I thought I hadn't remapped the R key but I had remapped it to M5 on the mouse. I went back into Controls, remapped it back to R and used the Soul and then remapped backt to M5.

Bug Report Here: It says 1 Dragon Soul down in the bottom right corner. I have the first word for Ice Form from the wall. I have remapped some keys. I'm offered the Unlock option for Ice Form but R doesn't work and clicking on Unlock with the mouse just keeps saying I need a Dragon Soul, which I just absorbed. I don't know what will happen on the next Dragon Soul.

This was a crazy battle too because the Frost dragon was harassing the Giant and Mammoths and I was trying to kill the dragon with Lydia there and the Giant and Mammoth kept killing me....so it would be nice if this Soul worked. lol

This happened to me too. I spent 11 hours of gameplay unable to unlock shouts. Pressing R just gave me the message "You need dragon souls to unlock shouts". Well, I had 2 dragon souls but it simply wouldn't work.

After spending forever pressing every key hundreds of times, killing more dragons just incase I had an insufficient number of souls to unlock shouts and generally searching online/trying random things in-game, mashing the keyboard for ten minutes eventually sorted the problem. It turns out that I needed to press Page Down, infact it turns out that I needed to press it twice. Then and only then the souls could be spent and shouts could be unlocked.

Took about 11 hours of gameplay to figure this bizarre method out.

Oh. Thanks! I'm level 25 now, and I've collected many shouts from walls (I think I have about 8 in a list now), and my shouts page tells me I have 6 dragon souls. But to date I've only been able to use Unrelenting Force, and the Whirlwind Sprint - which the game "unlocks" for you as early quest things.

I was starting to worry that I'd missed some huge obvious explanation somewhere as to how to unlock these other shouts - like only certain souls worked to unlock certain shouts, or something.

Now I've read this thread, maybe I'll be able to suddenly become a bit of a beast. I know I've got frost breath, fire breath, and some stormcall thing which all sound quite mean, in my list of locked shouts.

Seems a bit crazy that none of this has been made either easy, or obvious, anywhere - not helped by how clunky it is just to navigate through the awful UI to reach your shouts in the first place!

As "dwddd" said above, I think you might need to use whatever key it is you've set to perform ready/sheathe. This is why I have to use the page down key (although why I have to press it twice, I don't know)

Whyyyy in god's name the UI doesn't update the required keys to reflect your altered keymapping I don't know. Surely Bethesda must have noticed this? Did they test the game at all before releasing the PC version? :banghead:

Anyway, yeah, I'd try that. Your ready/sheathe key.

Thank you FadeOut for putting me on the right path; your suggestion didn't work for me but remapping back temporarily did. On to Skyrim!

I think I've got the same problem - R key doesn't work on the shout screen despite having 2 unlockable shouts and 2 dragon souls. Did remap the keys, but don't recall remapping the R key - is it mapped to ready/sheathe by default?

Will try FadeOut's suggestions (though have already spent a while trying multiple keys to get unlock to work).

Yes, R is Ready/Sheathe by default. I didn't have to say Default on all the keys to get Unlock to work though, only the R key had to be remapped back. Until the remapping problem is fixed, I'll just do that to use the Souls and then remap back to my preferred key.

Yes - it's the ready/sheathe key - it's just not updated on the screen legend if you remap it. Thanks all!

Edit: actually didn't have to revert the key to default for it to work, still seems to work when mapped to backspace (just needed to identify the function).
