Shouts not all that powerful?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 12:20 pm

To start of I'm in no way bashing the game, I absolutely love this game. I finally beat the main quest, I have about 85 hours, and i'm level 49 on my main character. I felt I really didn't use many of the shouts, just because they weren't useful. The ones such as firebreath or frostbreath do virtually no damage(I played on master so I don't know if that affected it). I mostly used Elemental Fury because it actually helped my melee. Unrelenting Force was fun sometimes but not really useful. I just feel for such long cooldowns(relative to spells and melee/power attacks) that a shout should do more damage than a sword swing(if it's meant to do damage) or be more useful than a spell.

The only shout that was really useful was
Spoiler

Dragonrend, I'd lock the dragon down and just melee it with a dremora lord tanking. It was fun when a dragon wouldn't actually engage, but I could time the shout to hit it mid flight and force it down.

Anybody else feel this way? Or can anybody tell me more useful ways to use shouts and/or shouts that I may not have that could be used often.

Get Slow Time tier 3.

Entire groups of enemies will fall dead to the ground by the time the shout wears off.

I actually find it unfair so I tend not to use it too much.

depends on the shout. fire breath and frost version are ass imo. but then things like unrelenting force v3 can be pivotol for a low armor PC. Slow time mauls dragons. Dismay is endlessly handy once maxed. Detect life...etc.

I always get a kick out of using Unrelenting Force on something when you're up on a mountain. I launched a sabre tooth off a mountain earlier, he was falling for a good 5-10 seconds lol.
I'd have to agree with you though for the most part the shouts seem kind of weak. I haven't upgraded very many past 1 word yet so that may be why.

I found iceform to be pretty useful as well
especially on hills
whenever something was dangerous enough to kill me I just froze it and laughed as it went tumbling down the mountain XD

They are all pretty powerful if you have all 3 words of the shout and keep the shout button pressed

I'll definitely have to look for the final rank of slow time. I feel like the shared cooldown kind of hinders some possible epic combinations, such as slow time and elemental fury. Using the freeze breath and then having a 90 second cooldown on any other shouts can be annoying, as it makes me accustomed to fighting without shouts. Half the time I find myself forgetting that I can even shout.

Only really used Ice Form,Dragon Rend, Unrelenting Shout and Mark of Death regularly, Call Dragon and Storm Call were nice when outside but were overkill for the most part. Only found 1 word of Slow Time and thought it was useless for my melee character, or atleast better spent on other shouts, acually for the most part the rest of the shouts were situational and i used them rarely, i did like using Animal Aligence when taking out packs of giants tho .
The prize for most worthless tho are Fire/Frost Breath and Kyne's Peace, did anyone max the beaths out? Are they acually good when fully unlocked?

I also thought it was kind of funny that
Spoiler

You get the call dragon shout after you finish the main quest, which I waited to finish after completing most of the big quest arcs.

Seems like I've been all over the game and have found exactly two shouts in 75 hours.

The damage shouts are underpowered, but many others are very valuable. Ice form on this annoying mages saved me many times.

Kyne's peace helped my mage from bear attacks early on, but now its completely useless. I unlock everything tho, i have 15 souls just sitting around so why not? lol

I find them fairly useful in some cases, or fun as heck to use, like unrelenting force a mob off a mountain, or ice form and watch em roll lol!

I guess the shouts could be more useful to me if I felt fights were challenging. Even on master, the fights were only challenging back at the lower levels, but back then I didn't really have many shouts. Now that I have full daedric and plenty of perks I only really need to use melee attacks anymore.

Yes! Ice Form is the best! Im purely melee 2h hammer, heavy armor monster. Very slow to attack and to get close. Ice Form is perfect to put those nasty mages in ice and i can walk up to them and one shot the little buggers. Elemental Fury is nice for boss battles.

i find i never really use shouts.

im so focused on looking at keyboard and fumbling through the block dual hand spell nonsense - of course i cant block (lol why should i be able to block??) that and trying to drink ten potions becuase some chick in rags one shotted me and im level 27.

i just watched lydia get beat to death. all i was trying to do was get my sword and shield - but instead this happened.. out came my healing hand, somehow couldnt see the flywheel because its not there anymore to notice that my shield became unequipped, got snotted into the corner by the one shot unarmored peasant, oh look theres lighting where my sword should be now (keyboard furiously clicking beneath my fingers).. OH look lydias dead and now there turning on ME. ok now im dead.

its really frustrating as a pc user to work around the clunky interface when your in a jam. i end up telling lydia to wait by the door as i sneak and arrow snipe one arrow at a time and back for every single npc or monster just to avoid the frustration

Half of the shouts seem useless to me. The only good ones to me are Elemental Fury, Dragonrend, Disarm and Unrelenting Force.

Now I feel lucky I bought an xbox 360 controller for pc, just for this game.
