Silt Strider Moans

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 4:09 am

If you ever venture out into the Pale, that swampy, misty area between Solitude and Morthal, you might hear some funny sounds on the breeze. Take your time when wandering around, feeling lost, and you'll notice, ever so lightly, a wailing, moaning sound far off in the background.

I don't know what it is.

I know exactly what it reminds me of. The sound of it really makes me miss the calls of Silt Striders in Morrowind. That haunting bellow that carried through the mist, announcing that a city was somewhere in the hills nearby, but never quite enough to figure out where.

Oh, so many things I miss about Morrowind.

Interesting... I felt claustrophobic in the swamps so I think I've only spent a maximum of 2 hours there (including dungeon diving) so I never took the time to notice. Perhaps it is time to return.

Do you know what?
I think you're right you know, although I might just be awash with nostalgia since Niamh effectively ran off the map to south last night and found in the distance a structure by a body of water that looked *suspiciously* like the Imperial City in Cyrodiil...

It's a cool effect. I remember the first time I heard that music track from Morrowind... I was like "no they did not!"

I can see how they were trying to recreate that alien world/spooky environment from Morrowind. In certain places in Skyrim you really do get a very haunting, alien feel.

The problem is our tendency to blaze across these areas, following the magic pizza slice on our compass.

For me, I've had a LOT more fun with this game using the Compass Tuner from Nexus. In it, you can disable the compass entirely AND remove the player icon from the map, which makes it very difficult to figure out where you are in the world. Forces you to move a little more slowly so you don't blast by some place you are looking for.

Also forces you to take a minute and look the heck around. The only way to know where you are is to compare what you see to what's on your map.

Since doing that, I've noticed a LOT of little http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1367374-another-wow-moment/.

Ah, I wish they had made the game a lot more uknown - as in, no map until you've been there, or at least purchased map sections from merchants. No compass unless you put the waypoint on yourself. But now that I've started the game I can't go back...

The game is much more engaging without the compass, that is completely true. I've been doing it for a while now.

It can be done on the PC, I have an app that does it. I don't know how it does it, though, so I can't tell you if it would work on a console. I don't imagine it would, though. There's certainly no option for it in the menus and I think consoles can't do anything that's not in the menu, right?

I dunno, is there a preferences or .ini file somewhere on the console that you can look at?

No. I was hoping someone had thought of a workaround that hadn't occurred to me. Oh, well. GPS ftw?

Wow, gonna hang in the swamps until I hear this. I know exactly what you mean about that music from Morrowind. I can remember the first time I heard it and stopped what I was doing and just went still for a bit. I still like to shop regularly just for the chance to hear it.

Another little something I've heard is a spell that Marcurio uses which makes a sound like the purple glowing crystals inside dungeons associated with Mages. (Not his shield spell, which also makes a noise, but another spell that I think is a restoration spell). I loved that sound in Morrowind, and it makes me smile every time I hear it in Skyrim.
