Simple Working GFX Tips

Post » Mon Aug 12, 2013 4:44 am

Ever since i purchased RAGE a couple days ago i had a lot of fun with the game, and a lot of frustration with the graphics.

I dug around the net and tried alot of configuration tips. But i found many "guides" are now broken, incomplete or lack the most important infos.

So here are my simple, currently working, no-BS tips to crank RAGE up a notch on reasonably fast machines.

MY specs:

CPU: i7 2600K

GPU: nvidia GTX 770

RAM: 16GB DDR3

OS: Win 7 x64

These tips should be viable for AMD users, hardware-/driver-specific bugs not withstanding.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Basics:

Start your game, go to Video setup and adjust as follows:

  • Resolution: 1920x1080 (Or Your Preference)
  • Display Mode: Fullscreen
  • AntiAliasing: 4x
  • Vsync: Off
  • Texture Cache: Large
  • Texture Detail: Off
  • Anisotropic Filtering: High
  • GPU Transcode: Enabled

Notes:

Turning Vsync On in the Options doesn't work (For me on my nvidia card) Leave it off and see driver settings.

The Texture Detail Filter needs its own paragraph here:

It was supposed to make close up textures look better/sharper. In my humble opinion it makes things worse. A LOT worse.

Especially in darker areas every single texture looks like an oversharpened, grainy smear. It makes the lack of resolution

even more appearant than without. I'll let you be the judge on this though. Just turn it on and off. The effect is noticable

immidiately (even though the game states otherwise).

My strong recommendation is: OFF

The CFG File:

There are many variations about these tweaks to be found on the net. Many can help, but also some do more harm than good.

In the end i pretty much went with the http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/how-to-unlock-rages-high-resolution-textures-with-a-few-simple-tweaks. Here is the compressed form:

  • Go to your rage's base directory. For example: ..\Steam\steamapps\common\RAGE\base
  • Create a new textfile and name it: rageconfig.cfg

Edit the .cfg file and enter the following lines.

  • vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 8192
  • vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 8192
  • vt_pageimagesizeunique 8192
  • vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192
  • vt_restart
  • vt_maxaniso 4
  • image_anisotropy 4

If you have a cuda-capaple GPU and wanna reduce/eliminate texture popin also add these two lines:

  • vt_useCudaTranscode 2
  • vt_maxPPF 16 //Change this to 8 if you use a dual core CPU.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Driver Settings:

Most of the driver settings should be left at default settings. I'll only note the important ones:

  • Vertical Sync: On

If you suffer from mouse/input lag, either live with it or turn Vsync off both ingame and in the driver profile. If not, you want

this forced on here to eliminate screen tearing (remember ingame vsync doesnt work for some reason).

  • Texture filtering - Quality: High Quality

No surprise here. The game suffers from low res textures so you want this as high as you can afford.

  • Anisotropic Filtering: Application Controlled

This one is important. I know your first instinct will be to set this to 16. Don't! RAGE simply can't handle it. You will get artifacts

or colored lines across object edges. If you get GFX glitches of any kind. Check this setting first.

  • Antialiasing - Tranparency: 4x (supersample)

If you got the horse power (in your GPU) enabling supersampling here will make a great adition to your ingame antialiasing.

Basicly it smoothes out all those little details regular AA can't. Narrow grates, objects at low angles, etc. Always pair same valued

regular AA with supersampling. If you use 2x AA in the ingame settings, use 2x supersampling in the drivers, and so on.

4x/4x gives the best quality/performance imho.
